Mmmm, this stuff is tasty!  The nice people at Zico sent me a case of their fabulous coconut water to try and have also offered to send a case to one lucky blog reader.

Before I get on to the details, what’s so great about Zico coconut water?  Let me tell ya…

It’s an excellent alternative to sports drinks, packed with electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium and phosphorus) and in fact, one bottle contains 26% more potassium than a banana.  It’s also less acidic than sports drinks (which is why I don’t drink Gatorade, btw) and a 14oz bottle is only 60 calories, so it’s also a fabulous alternative to diet soda as well.  What it doesn’t contain is just as cool: no fat, no added sugar, no cholesterol and it’s gluten free.  And after a run, it hydrates better than water, so seriously…Zico coconut water is da bomb.

    I also try to join as many road bike tours that I can. I just completed the TOMRV this past Sat. & Sun. riding

    I’m new to running, but have played roller derby for 3 years, and do lots outside with a personal trainer and pilates classes to help stay in shape for that! As well as eating better, since otherwise there’s no point in paying a trainer…!

And I live in SW FL so this time of year even the coolest part of the day is miserably hot & humid for running. So my question to you: at what point in mileage/heat/humidity is it important to have more then just H2O for runs and would you drink coconut water during or just after a run? Thanks!

    The healthiest thing I do for myself is to maintain my non-smoker status. I used to smoke ALOT, but almost 5 years ago I quit and although it’s still a struggle, I haven’t touched a cigarette since. I am in the midst of converting to a healthier lifestyle, especially when it comes to eating and drinking, and using more natural products such as sunscreens or things my body absorbs.

  • Re: balanced training… I got through my first couple of years of novice running just fine, ran the NYCM, and loved every minute of it. But then it seemed like I was getting injured every six months or so, so clearly something was off. Now in addition to running I’ve taken up triathlon and have been trying to be consistent about my strength work and dynamic stretching. So far it’s paying off in better body composition and overall strength – plus, tris are so much fun (the d-bag quotient notwithstanding).
