Yesterday morning, Nick leaves the house and notices something bad. His car is gone. His wonderful sweet Infinity G35, his home away from home, his safe haven with wheels, stolen overnight. The cops said it was probably a tow truck that took it in about 2 minutes, that way no glass needs breaking, no alarms go off, just grab and go. My heart breaks for him as he’s had a really rough few months (some of it my doing) and now he can only hope that the insurance works out since he still owed money on the car.
Then, just now I’m reading on CNN.com about that honor roll kid who was viciously beaten to death by a school gang, whacked with a railroad tie and his head stomped upon by some disgusting monsters in teenager’s clothing. Why does this world house so much evil? What happened to make someone do something that vile to another human being? At the risk of offending many of my readers, I really can’t grasp how people who win a fucking Grammy praise God and thank him for watching down on them when that same God allows some poor sweet kid to die in terror and pain. I just.don’t.get it.
I’m sorry. I woke up in a great mood, had a really nice speed session, albeit windy (6x800s@6:34), ate breakfast, read CNN and now I can’t stop crying. That poor kid.

All I can say is that most people are not shits. It’s a few who end up dominating the news. Poor Nick. I hope the insurance works out OK.
6 X 800 @ 6:34? Impressive!
and then they go and post the video. WTF?
that’s terrible!!! I can’t believe one of them stomped on his head. Like Jim said, theres only a few shits in this world but they stand out because of the ridiculous things they do
I’m sorry to hear about Nick’s car. I agree with the above statements that the bad overshadows the good, which is sad.
It was great to see you this morning. Talk about windy? It was windy indeed but never more so as when you breezed by me, you speed demon! Rock on.
I am sorry you have a warped sense of who God is. . .he is not a dictator that controls our every thought and action. He allows us free will and with that comes evil from many sick and twisted human beings. Please do not blame God – who created you – for these acts. As a fellow runner/marathoner I have enjoyed reading your blog, but i don’t believe i can continue to read this when i know how you feel about our awesome creator God!
Jim, thanks for bringing such a reasonable retort, you are so right. It’s what gets shown on the news and I’ve been off the news for a little while. Though yesterday I watched the news with Nick (I don’t have a TV now) and there was some other creep who wrapped a little kitten up in duct tape, so I’m feeling fragile with creepy people thoughts today.
Jenn, you were too cute this morning, you did a great job at your first Half, no matter what you say!
Monica, I don’t blame God one bit – I don’t believe in him (or her). I’m not trying to offend anyone, I think there’s room for everyone to believe what they want. I believe in being a good person and treating people with empathy (“do unto others…”).
Anyway, I went off on a tangent with God because his grandfather was saying how he went to Bible school and Church last week and something about that pure innocence and faith being bashed to bits is so senseless and sad yet it wasn’t enough to save him.
Don’t know why I thought of Grammy winners but it does always make me wonder that with so many speeches saying, “This is all thanks to God” why, when something bad happens, people don’t say “This is all thanks to God.”
I’m going to get more flack for this post then when I made some comments about Sarah Palin, that’s for sure (that lost me at least one reader that I know about). C’est la vie.
I can totally believe the tow-truck hypothesis concerning the theft of Nick’s car. Repo guys do it this way all the time.
For what it’s worth, I think your observation about how we attribute things to God is an sincere one. But people don’t just praise God for the good things. When really bad things happen, you will hear mumblings that God might be punishing the victim(s) for some offense as well.
I know how you feel. I feel like that, too, sometimes. I get so angry when I watch the news that my husband says I should be a judge!
What I do do is try to help others. I only race a couple times a year because I’m a blood donor. I have also donated hair to Locks of Love 4 times. We have taken in several stray cats. There are also a couple orphanages we donate to. I sent my old running shoes to Africa. I hope to start walking dogs for the Humane Society. I’m not patting myself on the back. I’m trying to point out some not so difficult things we can do to help others. My uncle volunteers with the NYPD to help victims of domestic violence. My cousin volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Please don’t think I’m bragging. There are many people who do a lot more.
Jim E is right. There are many more good people than bad. It’s just the bad ones who end up on the news.
Hi, Flo! Even as a deeply religious person, I can respect your beliefs. For me, faith is definitely blind sometimes. In fact, I’ve asked questions about myself before, like “How could God let this happen to me? I’m a good person!” Therefore, I can see where you are coming from. On the other side of things, I CAN see the good that God has done in many people’s lives. I’m sorry you don’t believe, but I still respect and love the heck out of you! Please, if you are ever curious or want to talk to someone about God (or your feelings about lack-there-of), remember that I’m here for you. I don’t have all the answers, but I’m willing to try.
(((HUGS))) about Nick and his car. That is really crappy. Someone really had some nerve to steal it from in front of his house. Good grief. Any hope that the police can find it?
School violence is my #1 biggest fear. What happened to that boy is so, so tragic. My heart goes out to his family and schoolmates.
Vince, ugh on the repo thought, but totally believable. Definitely agree with your point about it working the other way, too (the God blame scenario). That’s easier to understand than the innocent kids and grownups who suffer needlessly.
Melissa, you are not one bit bragging, you are a Wonderful Person! Seriously, that’s so much good you’re doing in this world, that is everything I imagine God would want someone to do and more. Four times for Locks of Love? Super impressed because your hair has to be really long so to make 4 contributions is wild. Big hugs for you doing so much to help others.
LARunner, you’re such a cool girl! I totally love you for being honest, yet true to your beliefs and core values while being open to others at the same time. Again, that to me is the essence of what I imagine Christianity to be. It’s almost enough to make me want to convert but then, I’d not be able to shock and tease you (or at least try on occasion). ;-)
It’s nothing, really. The hair keeps coming out of my head and they will cut it for free at Ulta and mail it off for you. Several people I know have adopted children and one of my friends donated a kidney to a stranger. We should all just keep doing what we can. Keep your chip up! Good luck to Nick!
Hey look on the bright side…..maybe Nick’s car is one of those 3.8 million they just recalled where the floor mat gets stuck ontop of the gas pedal and the thief will get what’s coming to them.
I don’t watch the grammy’s. Music sucks. It’s the work of the devil. j/k
Bwahahaha!! Blackbear, hilarious. You so funny.
I am so sorry to hear about Nick’s car!!!
I totally hate CNN these days. If you go to the US section all you see is bad news and they like the sensational articles about pets being killed. I don’t understand why they have to fixate on these things because it does cause us to believe that the world sucks. Thank goodness there are still good people in the world quietly doing their thing!!!!
I hope your day gets better!
Flo: I’m sorry for the recent spate of badness that you’re dealing with. A good friend of mine was beaten to death by total strangers some years ago. He had 2-year-old twins. I couldn’t even say, though, that the event had any effect on my (non) belief in God – I’d crossed that bridge a long time ago. Actually, I guess I’m actually in the middle of the bridge. I don’t think God exists, but I don’t know the universe well enough to state categorically that God doesn’t exist. I have more belief in the same fundamental law that you try to follow: treat others as you want to be treated. Yes, it has been co-opted by the religious folks, but I don’t think that not following any religion means that I can’t or won’t try to follow it.
Melissa: there’s no reason that you need to forgo racing because you donate blood if you’re eligible to donate platelets. You can actually donate platelets more often than you can donate whole blood, and since they’re not taking any red blood cells, it has no effect on your training. You just need to rehydrate. In my neck of the woods, it’s called “Automated Blood Collection”. Check it out.
ps: I hope they find Nick’s car. That sucks.
Barb, that is such an utterly tragic story about your friend. Sigh.
And Melissa, Barb knows her blood…she’s the queen of donation and is always giving it away, the ho. :-) Barb, you’re another do-gooder among us, so I’m sending virtual hugs to you, girl.
Christi, too true about CNN, though there was a time, not long ago, where I was immune to their shocker stories and would log on first thing to read the dirt. Don’t know if it’s hormonal or what, but I can’t stomach it as well anymore. I guess that’s a good thing.
Thanks, Barb! I will ask about it. I’m really sorry about your friend.
I’m with Jim E. Before we had world-wide media coverage one would think that most people are good, which is true. Trouble is, good people leading normal lives doesn’t sell.
Sorry about Nick’s car. The only thing lower is a motorcycle thief.
