Look up at your browser’s address bar.  Notice anything different?  No?  How about some missing hyphens in the URL.  Yessiree Bob, I finally got the domain name without dashes, woohoo!  That might be why, if you read this thing from a Reader, it looked like I had a million new posts over the weekend, the switchover meant changing everything from the old domain to the new.

The story of the name of this blog and the dashed domain is that I started posting on the Runners World Beginner Forum the same time I started learning to run in Feb 2007, picking Girl In Motion as my username.  So in November, when I started the blog, it made sense to use that name.  Wouldn’t you know, girlinmotion.com was already taken by a porno site, as I’m sure many of you discovered when trying to find this one.

Cut to about 2 months ago, I get a couple emails saying “girlinmotion.com is for sale for $1200″ to which my reply was “fuck you”.  I didn’t actually write it but it was mentally written the way my replies to spammers always are.

Then on Friday as I was coming home from my run (they’ve been hotbeds of ideas lately) and feeling wistful that I didn’t have that non-dashed name since I was starting all this action on the site and the dashes do leave a level of difficulty when saying the name “girl dash in dash motion dot com” and also, for searchers to find it naturally, those dashes are a hindrance.

Since a couple months had gone by since the coercion emails, I gave it a shot and put it into Godaddy to see if it was available.  YES!!!  Plus, I had a coupon, so I got two years of my brand new domain for $15 vs one year at $1200.  Happiness.

Bikini Ski

One of my readers is doing something pretty cool for charity.  Her sister-in-law suffers from Crohns Disease so to raise some dough, she’s going to ski in her bikini.  If she raises $1000, she’ll do two bikini ski runs.  Very clever and an entertaining way to help someone close to her.  So if you have a few bucks to spare, visit her blog Pedestrianrunner and throw a couple bucks her way.  Help her freeze her tush off for a great cause.

Friday’s MP Run

I finally did that 10w/8MP rearranged from last week.  It was a successful run, hit my paces without too much ado (MP miles 7:34, total avg 7:49) but I had a strange Boston thought on the cooldown mile home, that maybe I should pace someone instead of taking a chance on blowing up again.  Here’s what I posted to my friends in the sub 3:20 thread:

If the 3:20 doesn’t work (and there’s every chance that it won’t) I probably won’t be that far off my miserably gotten 3:33 so I won’t be too proud of the result anyway.  And if I make my goal easier by going for a 3:25 to begin with, again, not far enough off that crap 3:33 to matter and if that planned 3:25 goes awry, that’ll be really depressing.

So that’s what I’m thinking right now, not deciding either way but wanted to let you know what’s going on in this silly mind of mine.

A Snowy Sunday Long Run

Saturday was crazy, Philly got the 2nd biggest snowfall in its history (bumping December’s storm out) with 28.5″.  Here’s the photo I posted on Facebook, taken in the morning so there were still a few more inches to come.Yesterday was a 17 miler and while it was a bit treacherous getting to the park, they did a good enough job of clearing the paths so I was able to run without too much hopping around.  It was cold though, 22 with windchill so I wasn’t exactly feeling spry on the way home.  I think the cold keeps your muscles and tendons from being as pliable as they would be at normal temps, at least I know it’s true for tendons since that was a warning when I researched my ITBS, that it’s worse in the cold because it remains tighter so it must be so for all tendons.

And that’s it for Monday’s blahblah.   Have a great running week everybody and here’s a few smoochies for the road. :xo

  • Wow — running 17 miles after 28 inches of snow! That’s incredible. Here in New York, we didn’t get a flake. That is so bizarre that Philly got 29 inches — and it is about 100 miles south of here. Wierd.

    • Flo:

I know, Doggie, my NYC running pal shared Accuweather’s prediction for NY, saying it was going to be “Disruptive” and “Paralyzing”. Maybe that much hyperbole scared the storm away, lol.

I don’t get credit for running in that deep snow, only some parts were really bad because homeowners are required to shovel the sidewalks in front of their buildings. Most of them complied.

      • Over in the UK I believe that householders that clear their paths are liable if anyone slips over! Hence, most are uncleared and become treacherous ;)

Be careful using your porn URL – my company ran into real problems with something very similar – we found it appeared in a huge number of blacklists for web & email – took about 2 years to become reasonably clean. we found there are a couple of major blacklists – if you can off those by asking them nicely you will be most of the way to being clean:)
Just don’t look on the wayback machine ;) – no I said don’t look!!!!

        • Flo:

Yeah, I know about blacklists and thought about possible trouble but decided that it was worth the chance, crossing fingers no trouble. Can’t believe UK homeowners are in trouble if they DO clean up their sidewalks, that’s twisted!

  • Wow, that is a lot of snow!!
Glad you got the porn url for such a good deal, I wonder how many visitors you’ll get that will be searching for porn and instead they get you in a poo hat…ha ha ha. That’ll teach ‘em.

  • Congrat whit your new url name and what a lot of snow, wow.
And great to run a 17 miler in the big snow mountain!.
Good weekend and i hope that the snow is go away, so you can run free on the street!.
In Holland no snow thit time, but it is cold.
    Rinus.

  • Thanks for the shout-out! Wow, that is a lot of snow. we have not seen that much at all but then we never really do. We do see cold weather and running in that really does suck!

  • omg that is crazzzzy snow! you are a rockstar for doing 17 miles in that :)

  • runforlife20:

Congrats on the url. Are you running any 5ks or smaller races before Boston?

    • Flo:

I’m doing the Frostbite 5-miler in Ambler on the 20th, you doing it? A couple of my forum buddies are doing it (plus a nice guy I always pass on the bike path) so it should be fun, try to get up there. Other than that, the Shamrock Half in March and that’ll probably be it. What you got planned before NJ?

      • runforlife20:

I have no way to get to Ambler, otherwise I would do it. I want to do the NY half on march 21 because I met qualifying standards from my PDR time but the woman still hasn’t sent me an email with my number confirmation, so not sure…I wanted to do a few 5ks but it cuts into my long runs, so I think I’ll keep the races low key until later on

        • Flo:

I’d bring you with me but I’ll be going out with friends afterwards. Definitely lose the 5Ks if they interfere with any Long Runs, it’s not worth the tradeoff. Good luck getting the NY Half squared away, that’ll be a cool race.

  • Flo:

Hey guys, don’t give me any hero points really since there the bulk of the run was on the clear, but thanks for being your usual sweety selves. I am SO lucky that the park path is so well tended to. Today was recovery so I brought my phone for the first time to take some photos. It was fun! I’ll put ‘em in the next post.

  • Oh man I wish I had a path like that…so jealous. That is some crazy snow, but that is such a nice path. Oh and congrats on the official girlinmotin url.

  • RJR:

I’m impressed with how much social media effort you’re putting into your blog lately. I hope it works out for you and turns into another source of income. It would be so cool to be able to make money doing something as fun as writing about running.

I’m super jealous of the snow that you all got. Nothing even stuck up here. Very disappointing. Hopefully this week will be different.

    • Flo:

You were right about Twitter, I’m getting uninterested with it, it’s so impersonal that it’s not very compelling whereas Facebook, which I was afraid of because I thought all that social interaction would be overwhelming, turns out to be pretty damn fun!

Looks like you’ll have your white stuff this week, I’m not looking forward to the 18″ they’re saying will fall here. Enough already.

  • Wow, that’s some serious snow. I dunno how runners run in such cold weather. I spent the whole month of January in NYC last year and I was only able to squeeze out a handful of runs! You guys are hardcore!

Congrats on the new domain name! Glad you didn’t have to pay that crazy $1200. People are seriously such mofos.

  • Congrats on the URL, but too funny that it used to be a girly-x site. Haha, that figures. That snow is out of control! I don’t see how you northerners deal with that!

  • Ewen:

I was wondering why I had half a million posts over the weekend. Actually, I’m a bit of a fan of hyphens, but not in URLs. girlinmotion.com is much simpler.

Don’t know about the pacing someone idea. What pace? You’d think 3:45 would be easy, but whatever it is, there’s a lot of pressure to get the pacing right. Especially on a course like Boston where you need to throw the Garmin out the window. Go too fast early (the downhills) and you could ruin their race.

Why not have a goal of running to the best of your ability on the day? Your best possible race. No time goal. See what you get when you finish. My guess is you’ll end up with something in the 3:18 to 3:25 range.

    • Flo:

Actually Pace someone? Lol, that’s my codeword for “running with them”. My Best Race…what is that? I like the idea of it but I can’t imagine understanding limits or how it’s supposed to feel anymore. My gauge for the marathon is pretty screwed up at this point.

  • Tobey:

    Flo,
I do remember the first search I did for you :o . But it wasn’t half as bad as my friend who decided to buy his wife some Hooker Furniture for her birthday, and she walked into the room just as he began searching!! Oops!

  • runforlife20:

ready for the next foot and a half?

    • Flo:

At least this time I have better food in the house. I’m going out for my speedwork soon, looks like tomorrow will be a day off (cool by me, woulda been recovery anyway). Enjoy the snow day, hope you’re not planning 14 tomorrow. :)
