Now that I know what’s ailing me (run-of-the-mill ITBS crap), I spent the evening gathering info and feeling much better about the situation.  Thought I’d post an update in case you guys think I’m moping around the house today.

Here’s a handful of things I was doing wrong that aggravated the situation or didn’t help.

1. I waited during the run till it really hurt to stop and stretch when I should of stretched at the first inkling. (plus I didn’t know what to stretch, either)

2. While stopping on the run, I massaged and prodded the hurting place…not supposed to do that.

3. Once home, I didn’t foam roll it correctly.  I wasn’t relaxing my leg so it wasn’t getting in there at all.  I should mention, I’ve had IT band pain a couple times before, but closer to the hip so it was easier to attack.

4. Stopped ibuprofen after one day, should have kept on for a few consecutive days.

5. Only iced when it was hurty.  I’ll ice it a few times a day for the next few days and after every run.

6. Didn’t do IT Band stretches since I didn’t know that was the problem.

With all these fixable things, and the fact that it felt fine last night and beyond, I’m going for a short run tomorrow, after all.  From what I’ve read, at the point it’s at it won’t hurt anything and now I’m armed with a fight plan, I should be good to go.

    Flo,

I am working through some ITB issues right now, too. I am rolling that sucker and it does seem to help quite a bit. A pt gave me lots of ITB stretches….she told me to stop running after 2 miles, stretch it out, and then continue to run as long as there is no pain. ….I’ll be testing it out for a 7 mile run tomorrow….it’ll be my longest run since the half in May….ugh!!

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • I had quite a few IT band problems as well. Are you doing any physical therapy? Also, check out http://www.bulletproofknee.com .

  • Flo:

Misery loves company, though I’m sorry you’re dealing with this ITB crap, too, La Casalinga.

Ben, I actually stumbled upon your site while searching for info last night. Scared the shit out of me, actually (that’s one loud media file).

  • Sounds like you have everything under control.
Injuries aret he worst, because we never listen to what they are telling us, we just try and push thru them, and end up doing more harm than good.

  • Barb:

I hope today’s run goes well for you, Flo!

  • LARunner:

Keep stretching even when it feels better. Keep rolling even when it feels better. Those two things have kept ITBS at bay (for me) for over two years. Hope you were able to run today!

  • Flo:

Flyers, too true, I resisted that push today deciding not to run after all.

Thanks Barb, you’re so sweet to check in. I’m saving those “good run” wishes for tomorrow. :D

LA, great having an experienced sufferer here to guide me, thank you! I will be sure and keep on it. Been reading too many chronic ITBS stories in the past few days, lol.

Glad to hear you’re going for a test run on it. You’ll be fine, you caught it early enough. Plus all 100 pounds of GirlInMotion can’t be THAT much stress!

  • Flo:

Blackbear, very funny. You must have me mixed up with Deena Kastor (because we look so much alike). I’m morbidly obese compared to her and she’s 105.
