This’ll be a short one because I’ve gotta rush off to a narration job which, ironically enough if you read the last post, is about rhinoplasty. I now know way more about that procedure than I ever wanted.
Speaking of “if you read the last post”, I was impressed by how many actually did. Around 700 unique readers, which is a lot for a post where I don’t go to the hospital or have some other kooky crappy escapade. I got so many cool comments, both on here and on Facebook that I wanted to thank you folks for taking the time to read the thing and also, that I love how alike so many of our experiences are. Makes the world a smaller place, for sure.
Training
I thought it’d be a good time to compare my original training plan with what I’ve done so far. Because the weather has been an unyielding bitch since June, some of the workouts were adjusted, made shorter or slower, or run on different days to chase a cooler temp. I also had the hamstring incident that added an extra rest day and forfeited some hard running.
Today’s workout was changed, btw, twice. Adam noted that 6×1000@5k was going to be too tough, so make it 5×1000, but then when I cried Help! because the heat index at 6am was going to be low 80s, he took pity on me and made it 12×400 with generously long recoveries (2min). I loved it!
Click on it for full-size. The original plan is on the left, starting with July 12th and goes through this week. I know it’s a bit confusing, just note that the workouts are written above the days and each week’s total mileage is to the right, outside of the calendar days.
For Ilana
Sweet Ilana lives in the cool recesses of Colorado and enjoys gloating over her 50 degree weather on Facebook. She contemplates wearing a jacket and will be in snowshoes the next time she checks in. So today, when I returned from my 8.5 miles, I wrung out my sports bra and shorts just for her – a nice, thick, white sweat so she could share some summer love with the rest of us whiners. Goes great in coffee, too.

A little over an hour's running and this is what my clothes had to show for it.
And that’s it for now. Gotta dash off and talk about Alsarraf septorhinoplasty and mucoperichondrium now, because I’m cool like that. Have a nice Wednesday, all.

Gotta spread that sweet sweatin’ love!! I sure hope Ilana appreciates the effort you went through for her
love that sweat. hahah. i bet you can’t wait until the fall!
Ew… my stomach was already feeling touchy today, thanks for turning it over one more time- LOL!
Erm. Thank you for sharing that. Those of us in cooler climes can see what grossness we’re missing!
Hi Flo!! Long time reader, first time poster. OMG this sounds gross, but THANK YOU for sharing your sweat!! I am in Ft Wayne IN, so I get the heat, rain, snow just a day or two before you do. I have been having to wring my clothes out for the last two months after running. I was beginning to wonder if I wasn’t normal! Good to know I have a fellow female in sweat! And oh, my boyfriend will not come near me after I run (can’t say that I blame him!)
I love that sweat picture. A flawless fusion of the hilarious and gross.
First off,
Gross.
Secondly, it gets hot enough here during the day to sweat.
Finally, given your documented fascination with form, I was wondering if you ever filmed yourself running. I know I haven’t. I was watching the picts/vids at Steve Magness’ site and I realized that my only perspective on my form (my eyes) probably isn’t the best way to go. I am going to give it a shot tonight as I think I am in need of some fine tuning and hip extension.
p.s.
I also found some new hip exercises..

Ha bloody ha. I’ll have you know that by the time I managed to talk myself into a trail run this morning, it was almost 70! I am sure I sweated a little. Maybe.
I’ll send you some of my snow and ice in January.
Hey all, glad I could provide some grossness for you. Funny, because it’s my sweat, it doesn’t seem gross at all.
Kelly, thanks for entering the fray!
Ilana, ’tis true, your snow/ice photos will have my sweat beat any day.
Matt, sorry…your comment was stuck in spam (links do that sometimes). Ewwww on the rippin’ and the tearin’!!! Too funny. Yep on the gait video. It’s GREAT to do that, I agree, you really can’t tell how you run until you see it from outside yourself. I’ll be interested to hear what you think once you’re made yours. I need to make a fresh one soon.
The filming went okay. I was on my treadmill in the basement and really had to blast some light on the set up.
I tried to play with the shutter speed. I read somewhere that anything above 1/600 is best for slo-mo but I really didn’t notice. My camera creates weird file types-a pain in the ass.
Back view of foot showed slight pronation (inward roll)which I’ve seen in shoe wear. Close-up on side view showed mid-midstrike on left foot and back-midstrike on right. Some imbalance there.
Will do a complete side view tonight which I think will reveal more.
Cool! I wonder though, doesn’t the TM restrict your stride? Seems like you’d have a more accurate idea if you took it outside, letting loose with your stride and all. I could be off-base, I’m not a TM user…
watching and reading all the stride info the last few days…I’m not sure letting loose with the stride is the best thing. I don’t feel restricted on the TM. In fact, it could help in keeping things tight. It’s hard to do wild arm swings, for example, with the side bars.
But I meant to say that I’ll be doing outside filming. I just ran out the light last night. I can compare my stride TM vs. Out.
I didn’t mean let loose as in uncontrolled, just freedom to move naturally without a machine involved, a few warm-up back/forths till you’re moving as naturally as you do during a run. Seems like the TM keeping things “tight” would confuse the evaluation since the point is to see our flaws, not prohibit them. Anyway, sounds like you’ll have a great set of data to work with between the two, should be fun to compare. Happy filming!
Peeled a blister off my instep today. Your is more gross. Throw away that measuring cup.
That sweat cup is hilarious! I love it. It’s exactly what happens to me in this heat. I have never thought to “measure” it though. I just know I look like I just got out of the shower after a run in the heat and humidity! Great post Flo!!
I just threw up a little in my mouth…
I’d hate to see that cup if you were running in cotton!
On the Matt TM video… The TM would have to be on zero incline. I’ve noticed TMs tend to promote forefoot landing if inclined. Personally, I prefer the non-TM videos (like the one you made previously). Another of those now would be interesting after you’ve been working on your stride. Go for a full-length side-on so we can compare your hip extension to Ryan Hall’s.
Hah, I still haven’t internalized hip extension properly – I don’t think I do it right and would love a couple more cues to find one that makes sense. Until then, Ryan is safe as the winner.
Edited: just read the comment in Magness’ blog by anonymous, which seems straightforward “If you are not sure what hip extension is then stand up, with your feet together. Lift one foot off the floor and with a straight (or bent) knee push that foot back so that your thigh moves backwards…that’s hip extension.” I feel that when doing the exercises but not particularly while running. Oh well, work in progress…
That could be the funniest post ever. What goes on in that mind prior to…”ya know, I think I’m gonna just wring out my sports bra in a measuring cup…” LMBO!
Hahaahahah! I could totally beat you on the sweat thing, just saying… And… we are nearing ONE MONTH now! Aren’t you excited? Coming to visit is the highlight of my fall, so I hope you are ready. Sorry for being so MIA from your blog. I’ve been up to my eyeballs in school work, and “things.” LOL.
