4:30 into my last 12 mile run before the marathon. I wiped out on the sidewalk. Opened the exact same spot on my leg from May’s fall with the added bonus of a swollen shin and punctured hands. I even matched the top of my left knee to that previous fall, as well.
A second after it happened, I sat up and began bawling like a baby, tried to blot the blood with leaves and considered my options. I could go home and try again later or just go home and crawl into bed. Or I could finish the run. I ran.

oh man, that sucks! Clean it out well!
-your in the hormone bitchiness.
OUCH! Did you slip on ice? At least it’s done. Now you can relax a little more before the big day!
Nice! (In a gnarly way, I mean. I hope you didn’t hurt yourself too badly).
I biffed my knee during a marathon in early September and it took FOREVER to heal. Fortunately it didn’t interfere with my running (and didn’t really hurt); merely the scab stayed around for a long time. I still have a nice red circle there.
Go rock it at Philly!
OMG! That is the same pic as the FloGoBoom day, wash that sucker out – I think I can see the swelling as well. Get some ice on it, or a bag of frozen peas.
BTB, you have good taste. I have the exact same Ikea shelf.
Oh that so sucks!! I haven’t bitten it since I fell while running on vacation in Florida about 5 years ago. (just jinxed myself!) But………….I was attempting to run while still severely drunk from the night before. And……unfamiliar territory. Those damn sidewalks will get you everytime. No seriously, take care of yourself and glad you were able to finish your run.
Good job on finishing the run Flo. Hard Core. So no big damage I take it. Ice and anti-inflammatories are what you need now. Wear the scabs with pride next week.
Flo – take it easy – make sure to ice and take advil.
I am sure it won’t effect your running.
As they used to say on Hill Street Blues . . . let’s be careful out there.
OK – I have no idea where that came from!!!!
That looks like it hurt. Not to ask personal questions, but is your book case in the back of the picture 2x8s nailed together????
Sweet Jesus, that’s nasty. But I’m glad you ran the rest of your run. (Dubious support from someone who ran 16 miles after getting mauled by a German Shepherd.)
I hope any passersby were appropriately horrified/impressed.
Ouch. I like the choice to continue running though.
Thanks friends, it just stings a bit now but I’m pissed because it took so long to heal the first time, but I’ll live. :-) The sick part is, in the last post, I almost wrote about how I’d been envisioning taking a fall at a water station but erased it because it seemed like bad luck. Maybe I should have written it after all.
Preston, lol, it’s Ikea’s cheapest shelving unit, basically 2x8s w/predrilled holes in it. My next apartment will have classier, I swear. Though if it’s good enough for BlackBear, it’s classy enough.
I think we need to consider running knee guards and gloves for your hands….I swear when Runthruit told me what happen I thought you had dug up your old post about falling last time.
I hope all heals quickly and that the spill was taken now and not on race day.
Ohhh and in classic Flo style you just kept on running….your awesome (or crazy), LOL.
I guess consider it luck that you didn’t hurt yourself worse. You’re not going to slip at an aid station. Fast people don’t do stuff like that. Take care of yourself woman.
Man you are tough. I was surfing and my husband looks over at the computer and sees this picture and was like “woah”. I was like “yeah this is Flo, she is a hardcore fastie”.
CJ
I really didn’t expect you to take my tale of trouble in a last hard MP run to the next level. But, you know, if the rest of you still worked, go for it.
You “did a CJ”! Almost as impressive as the original:

Well done!
Ewen, she definitely wins the prize. Yuk.
I WOULD open this right in the middle of my lunch, thanks! Hope you are okay, that is a sucky way to start a run…At least you took the time to shave your legs before the picture
or perhaps that is what REALLY happened.
Will you get to keep the leg? ;-) You’re a tough cookie, and best to get this stuff out of the way now. Great things are around the corner. Thinking good taper thoughts for you. -Ron
Oh I did that once Flo. Running with blood dripping down your legs is not fun but I must say it makes you forget about it for the time being. The last time I fell while running I actually had a cop stop me bc he thought I had been mugged..lol, and interestingly it ws during my lady time as well. Hope you feel better.
OUCH…that stings me just looking at it. I hope it’s feeling good and numb now.
Are we going to have to lock you in a padded room with a padded treadmill til race day? And that’s just for the hormone bitchiness.
Falling is lucky – I fell during Philly last year and BQed. Keep it clean and see you Sat.! I’m so freaking excited and I’m just spectating!
yikes, that must have hurt. I’m sure you will still kick butt on sunday!
Seriously folks. You have to be careful out there. I speak from experience.
This is the kind of shit that hardens you up. Great job powering through it. Preston – you’re a dork.
Came across this on LetsRun: 2009 Philadelphia Marathon NEW FINISH ***MUST READ***
Joe, that just made my stomach turn. It’s human collision waiting to happen!! Shit. If that’s for real, it’s really going to suck for the faster runners since the marathon crowd will still be coming in droves when they finish. I’ll only have to go through 6+ hour finishers, of which there will far less of.
You Rock.
Flo, in NYRR HMs in the park I end up starting to lap people at about 11 miles (so we’re talking about people going very slowly) and I have had to get through them to get to the finish, i.e., I’m on their outside but the finish is inside them. Somehow I’ve never actually had a problem getting through. Didn’t mean to freak you. It’s amazing how an experienced runner can slice through a crowd without breaking stride.
Ouch! Hope that is healing well by now. I’d have guessed you’d choose to finish the run
All the very best for Philly!
