Finally! The Gifted Runner is up and happening.

I’ve been kicking the idea around for a while now, designing runner-centric t-shirts and gift stuff, after all it is a subject I’ve become completely rabid about. Granted, the original idea was based solely as a tax write-off. I mean, how lovely to have a legitimate excuse for deducting race fees, shoes, everything really. But somehow, even that wasn’t enough to get my ass moving. All it would have taken was adding a couple designs to Fish Pie, but I just wasn’t feeling it.

Honestly, my main concern was “what would my forum peers think?” I didn’t want to design something I’d be semi-embarrassed about, but rather stuff that makes sense to me and my vision of running. Thus, you’ll find nothing touting, “It’s just about finishing” or “Go Jogging”.

What I have done though, unlike for Fish Pie – where the designs were based on shirts first and the other stuff was basically a shirt design slapped onto a lot of other items – this time I started with posters and the gift stuff first, because you can be a lot more elaborate for printing on paper, tiles, mugs, etc. than you can on fabric. So most of the designs have two versions, an apparel version and an everything else version, click in and see.

Anyway, I really hope you like it, though I’m aware it may be way off your cup of tea – my vision can be a little, ahem…unique. No worries. It made me happy to create it all and like I said, who couldn’t use a great tax write-off? Hehe.

I loved this description of the 5K Addict:

“We know you. You can’t get enough of those short, painful race efforts where you feel as though your guts are spilling out of your nostrils. They are, but you look damn good while it’s happening.”

You brightened my Friday morning – Thanks Flo!

  • Bob:

    Looks good!
Will you be adding more designs and sayings?

    Bob

  • Flo:

Jim, thanks for calling that out, very cool of you to actually read something on the site, much less enjoy it. :)

    Bob
, thanks! You bet, this is only the beginning, I’m going to try and add new stuff on a regular basis.

  • Mir:

GIM, this is AWESOME. The “Danger: Marathoner” and “Chafing” designs practically had me spitting food on my keyboard. I love it!

  • Flo:

Thank you so much Mir, my fellow BQ-attempting forumite! Spitting up is about the highest praise I could ask for. You are a true sweetie for saying so.

  • Matt:

Love the new site Flo! I can see what im putting on my birthday and christmas wish lists this year :)

ANY way at all you can work out some kind of deal to get some wicking tech shirts too or am I just talking silly ? A guy can hope and dream right :)

  • Flo:

Thanks, Mattsky!! You know, that was another reason I hesitated to do this, because Cafepress only offers cotton stuff and it seemed dumb to sell running shirts that are cotton. Then I reasoned that we’re not running all the time, so it wasn’t completely ridiculous.

The main thing about Cafepress is that I only have to make the pictures, they do the rest. Not sure if I can find a company with wicking fabrics that does the same but I’ll start checking out options. I only know that I don’t want to have inventory and make the items myself like I used to for Fish Pie, so we’ll see..

  • Matt already asked on of my questions, so I will ask the other, if I come up with a shirt-worthy saying, do I get a byline, (or better yet, commision)?
Although if it is clever enough to put on a shirt, you have probably already thought of it ;)

  • Flo:

Honestly, Tobey? I wouldn’t use it. I only like to use ideas that come out of my own head, no matter how clever it might be. I’ve always been like that when it comes to creation. It might be a bit pig-headed but at least that way I know it’s mine, all Mine! Bwahahahaha…

Btw, did you notice I added a plugin to the blog that let’s you edit your comments now? You have 30 minutes after you write it to mess with it. You get a byline for that since it was your typos that inspired me installing it. :D

Editing function brought to you by Tobey The Great.

  • Matt:

Flo, the only site I can think of where you can put your own designs on tech shirts is http://www.runningbanana.com and unfortunately I didn’t see anything about doing things like a side business like Cafe Press does :(

Oh well, i’ll definitely be ordering a couple things from you. probably sooner rather than later ( especially the BQ related stuff haha)

  • Matt:

BTW, Edit function isnt working for me :(

  • Flo:

I found one, Zazzle, but their performance blanks are $30 to start with, so they’d be pricey.

You’re right, the edit thing isn’t working, must test… :(

  • Kai:

Flo, I LOVE the “Danger: Marathoner in Training, Hide All Food” one! Fiancee took one look and said, boy, do they know you. =D

  • Flo:

Kai, Bruce…thank you and thank you!! All you guys are such swell friends even though, except for Mattsky, we’ve never met. Group Hug!!

Hey, if anyone sees any typos or pages that are doing weird things, let me know and I’ll fix ‘em.

As far as this blog, I got rid of the edit thing for now, I’d have to think and my brain is cooked, but I’ll get it going eventually, sorry to giveth and taketh away (but you never really hadeth, so it’s ok).

And here’s a really funny youtube thing; Joe Cocker at Woodstock but with someone’s graphic interpretation of the lyrics. Hilarious.

  • Lisa:

Flo-wonderful business venture-you will do so well. i can’t decide what to order yet, but my order is coming! /best of luck to you! Lisa

  • Jim E:

I would just love a technical tee with that “Some Sucky Race” bib for my group runs. Oh well.

Hmm. I could get it in cotton for the apres-run breakfasts! Time to drop hints on the S.O….

  • Flo:

Lisa, thanks for the vote of confidence! Much appreciated.

Jim, I will continue to check out my options on the technical fabrics, I did find an alternative company yesterday but it’s a bit confusing on how it works and as I mentioned, the blanks are a bit expensive.

I’m glad you like that design, it made me laugh to make it. I started with a high number of no significance, like 10,349, which I thought was funny because it meant some huge-ass anonymous race, like Disney, then 13 + 666 came to me while out on a run.

  • Hmmm. Very nice. I may be getting in on the “They can’t all be PRs and Sunshine” bandwagon myself.

  • Flo:

Aw, thanks Vince! You are obviously a man with impeccable taste. :)
