It’s official: I’m pooped and so ready to dial back. I was asked a couple posts back about my taper plans so I linked to a graphic of my penciled-in schedule, it has since changed considerably. Mostly because after last Saturday’s MP run and then Sunday’s 20, the next few days had my calf complaining to me, so I had to baby it which meant lowering the mileage at the beginning of the week and going slower throughout. I did get a pretty good tempo run done but that was it as far as quality. The schedule went like this:
Mon: 7 recovery (8:56)
Tues: 9 pouring rain, windy and hurting calf (8:58)
Wed: 13 slow again because of the calf (9:01)
Thurs: Off (enough of the calf, heal already)
Fri: 8 w/4tempo (calf was good, tempo was a bit slower than HP though @ 7:21s)
Sat: 6 recovery (8:51)
Sun: 17 (9:05s, slowest LR this cycle)
Today’s 17 was quite a tough one, it’s warm now so I ended up taking my shirt off on the way back, but the bottom line was I felt tired in legs, body and mind. I had planned to do 4MP but I knew that was not going to happen. I did 1, lol, but it was 70 degrees by that time and my big toes were really unhappy (they’re both bruised now and I had to stick a needle under the nails to drain them before the run…nice, huh?) so I wasn’t sad about cutting the MP miles, more like I’m happy to know I’ve reached the topping point and that I will most assuredly benefit from two weeks of tapering.
As for my big toes, it’s insanely irritating to have this nail bruising/blistering happening now, but I guess in one way it’s good, hopefully the blisters will harden the toes up within the next couple weeks. I attribute it to all my LRs being done in the trails, more footwork and ups and downs than any other cycle, so again, it was for the good, I just wish it didn’t hurt.
Hey to Steph (or was it Linds? they’re identical twins), it was cool to see you out there today, you looked good! Funny about the orange Philly Distance Run shirt, I must have seen 50 people wearing one this morning.
Interactions this week
Ignore this if you read my Facebook updates, but I had a couple entertaining bouts of human contact this week. On Monday’s recovery, there were 4 college rowers in the river who burst into an acapella rendition of Sheena Easton’s “Morning Train” then waved at me and wished me a good run.
Not two minutes later, I heard a double boom from what I call “Dead Man’s Curve”, a curve in the road near the bike path, but hidden by a fence, and every time it rains, I seem to see the tail end of a wreck. So this was a double wreck caused by a line of cars sitting behind a wreck that had already happened. Triple wreck! Hoping everyone was ok.
Then the next day, it was pouring rain and windy and I was feeling pretty crappy but as I neared home, a man under an umbrella yelled out “Dedication!” to me. What an unexpected present that was. Suddenly, everything was made right.
I want to spread that word to you all, too, because every single one of you who read this blog sweat, work hard and go the extra mile in some form or another and it’s too easy to take ourselves for granted. It makes no difference how fast you are, if you win awards or not, be proud of yourselves for having dedication to do something that most people never dare to do…get up off their asses.
And with that, I’m going to sit on mine for the next two weeks. In my mind, anyway.

It was me
lol…i know i saw so many people with the orange! It was so hot today…I made sure to get out my house by 8:45 so I wouldn’t get it too bad
I can’t believe boston is in 2 weeks…Crazy. Good luck to you. I think you’ll do just fine
Yippeee for the taper! I can’t believe Boston is so close. Can’t wait to “watch” you hammer that course. Take care of your feet!!! I’m living proof of what can happen when you don’t;)
I dont think I have ever welcomed a taper so much as this one. When I finished my run today it was 75 degrees.
Make room, I’ll be sitting on my ass too.
It may have led to a tough 17, but I think it’s good that you’re getting the acclimatization out of the system… now you will be ready for pretty much any weather my fine city decides to throw at you (but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that it’s cool/mild)!
Wow, you guys are having some hot temps up there. I finished my LR today at 8:00 a.m and it wasn’t quite 70, so maybe cooler here? Crazy. Flo, you have had a rocking training cycle, but with that comes time to rest. Enjoy your rest period and get ready to SMASH Boston. Congratulate yourself on a successful training cycle.
be very careful with those blisters. i’ve been getting some lately and one popped and got all infected and i had to go to the ER last night. ugh. happened to me last winter too. i guess i’m just really paranoid now about blisters in general and get insanely worried when anyone mentions them haha
and UGH to this weather. sure it’s nice to lounge in but i feel you in having a hellacious LR in 70*+ temps. i kept telling myself that between the heat and the monsoons we’ve had i’m ready for everything. haha. including taper: i’m pooped too!
OMG, now that’s major! I’ll be sure and drown my ouchies in alcohol now that you’ve said that. Hope you’re feeling better today.
Good luck with the taper and I hope your toes get better! Thanks for the reminder about dedication. I needed to hear that!
It’s kinda fun that a bunch of us are tapering in sync. I had one good, one poor run this weekend, but fitness is looking good. Just need to not do anything foolish in the next two weeks.
Maybe don’t literally sit on your ass for two weeks — not sure that’s the ideal taper
“Dedication” was a good one. It’s true. Anyone who’s training to run a good race is dedicated. Hope you get to keep your shirt on with some milder temps over the next two weeks. Enjoy the taper!
Dedication-that’s awesome.
I agree…this training cycle has just been tough for me. The light at the end of the tunnel is a very welcome thing.
In need of some advice – I think last marathon I also had some issues with in my mind thinking I couldn’t run 26.2 and I held myself back so recently I’ll tell myself I’m only running 6 miles for example and then after I reach 6 I add 3 more on to train myself mentally to do more than I think I can handle…do you ever do this? or have anyother ideas to help when I hit the wall?
I wish I had advice for you, but since I’m not the most successful marathoner, it’s not something I feel confident in guiding others about. I do know the adage “trust your training” is about as true as it gets, you have to believe that every time you went out and did your runs it was all money in the bank as far as fitness gains.
I had to laugh at your last sentence “…when I hit the wall” LOL!! Get rid of that mindset immediately, girl! It’s not a “when”, it’s an “if” and if you pace yourself smartly and eat your gels and drink enough water, there won’t be a wall. I blame my last one on pacing incorrectly for that day, I didn’t have it yet I tried to force it, so that’s probably the best advice I can give, now that I think about it: Trust and listen to your body. No wall for you!
Lol thanks Flo. you’re so smart
You’re too generous. If I was so smart, I wouldn’t have bombed Philly, but I love you for saying so.
And I’ll repeat, you looked really good out there on Sunday, strong form!
I have that bra!!…suprised to see you out SO early and geez it was already hot as heck
LOL!! Target’s fine sports bra selection. Wish they’d make more patterned ones. I follow the weather, so from now on till it gets cold again, I’ll be out early. I actually like it better, no time to dilly-dally and then you have the whole day ahead of you.
