On Monday, we were talking about skirts and race wear on the Women’s BQ thread and I was talking about my running skirts from runningskirts.com, which I love wearing because they’re comfortable, cool and don’t chafe. However, I hadn’t planned on wearing one for the marathon because I’m taking my gel flask and the waistband isn’t firm enough to hold the clip holder without bouncing.
While I was going on to my gal-pals about the pockets (two roomy pockets on either side which are much more comfy and convenient than a back pocket), I realized that maybe I didn’t need to wear my flask clip thing at all, I could just carry the flask in one of the pockets! 4.5 months of training and this idea just occurs to me.
So anyway, I get excited by the prospect of wearing the skirt because that means I can take the pocketless handheld (it’s cooler), and have room for S-caps, tissue and even sunglasses in my other skirt pocket. I couldn’t wait to try it out for my last interesting workout, the marathon rehearsal of 7 w/2@MP. I was so excited that the next morning I put on my marathon garb and had a great workout! The pocketed flask fit perfectly, no bouncing, I even drank out of the flask during the MP miles (I’d filled it with water to get the weight right) …A-OK! All Systems Go.
Then I get back home and realize I’d been so excited by the skirt prospect, I’d switched my workouts around. I was supposed to do that run today, Wednesday. Tuesday was supposed to be recovery.
Suddenly, I was transported 40 years back in time to my first day of first grade, when I was so excited to go to “big” school, I woke up at 5am and immediately put my brand new clothes on (plaid jumper and white tights – why do I remember such things?), not once noticing or caring that it was pitch black outside. Well, apparently I’m still that little kid, so thrilled to get this show on the road, I can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!! Er, wait a minute. Maybe just one more month of training?
In non-running news, you know you have a poor excuse for a cat when you see it chasing a mouse (yes, I’m embarrased to say we have the occasional vermin) and the cat ends up laying right on top of it, still looking madly about to see where it’s gone. A minute later, after the mouse had snuck away again (and the cat was still looking wildly left and right) I actually had to pick up the cat and turn it around like a broken compass to face the mouse’s direction. Dumb cat. Lucky mouse.

city cat, it take ‘em a while to catch on.
Ah, that makes sense, because she’s not so retarded in her other cat activities.
Cats that lack hunting talent can be a blessing. No little corpses left as gifts. One of our cats was once cornered by an aggressive crow, and had to be rescued. Very embarrassing for her. About the only thing she can catch is dogs, so she chases them! The dogs are usually too startled to try and bite her.
Anyway, Foot report: Not a stress fracture, Yay!. Damaged plantar fascia Boo! I can run again Yay! But carefully, with an arch support, and back to the well cushioned shoes. I was wearing lightweight shoes when it happened.
Thank god!! Sucks that you have a damaged plantar fascia, they seem to cause trouble for a lengthy time, but it’s great that with the supports and shoes you’ll be fine. Whew, what a relief, huh?
I agree about the lack of corpses, but now I feel horrible for the mouse. It’s day 2 and it’s still being chased (if it’s the same mouse) in Kitsia’s languidly bored way. It’s like she’s going to scare and/or tire it to death. Ugh. I never thought I’d side with a mouse, but I feel total empathy for the little creature. Oh well, Animal Kingdom and all that…
He said that plantar problems are more common at the heel end, and mine should hopefully be less troublesome. My stride is a somewhat manufactured thing, like a golf swing, so I’ll probably tweak it a bit more to take some stress off that area.
Pfitz has you do an MP run on the Wednesday prior? Wow. Daniels does his last speed session on Tuesday, and after that it’s all easy with a few strides. So your switcharound might even be good.
It’s just 2 miles at MP, more like a rehearsal for the race as far as clothes and shoes.
Cool on the stride adjustment, just don’t overcompensate and end up with a new tweak.
IM excited about the skirt for you too!
Don’t you realize that you just screwed up all 4.5 months of training by doing your rehearsal run a day early?!
Just kiddding.
I did the *exact* same run yesterday morning — gel flask test, 7 miles with 2 at mpace (okay, I use a modified Pfitz plan, so that’s no shocker). Still, it’s weird to think of other souls out there testing their gel flasks at high speeds. I have to safety pin the flask to my shorts in three places, plus use a rubber band to secure the flask. That stops the bouncing.
It was in the 40s here in NY, and I did get some odd looks running around practically in my underwear.
I’m just glad I can eat carbohydrates again…now if I could only sleep.
Bruce, too funny! As always.
Your excitement is palpable.
Julie, how hilarious that we were both flask testing. Interesting you mention safety pins, I always put one in that little extra triangle of fabric on the clip keep it tighter to the waistband, helps remove the bounce.
Ah, sleep. With a couple days to go, may I suggest an OTC sleep thing if you’re really having problems? A half tablet of Unisom really helps with a minimum of medication. Don’t get the gels though, that’s basically benadryl and supposedly can leave you groggy the next morning.
I’ve been ok with sleep since I don’t have to run so early in the morning lately, but will probably use 1/2 tab tomorrow night, just to make sure I get a solid sleep on that ever-important two nights before.
The OTC meds always make me feel like I’ve been shot in the head the next morning. So I’ve got the serious stuff — Lunesta — for just such occasions. But since it’s $9,000 a bottle, I save it for the only most important nights, which are tonight and tomorrow.
Now…off to check the weather again…
OK! Sleep help the professional way. Now if we could have a cold front move in, I’d consider everything in order…

That was hilarious!!! What’s the deal with that? Is this combined with a generator to put anyone’s name in (because I notice they don’t ever speak the name). I see you have to be a member to access the site. Do tell. Lol, too f-ing cool!!
I have no idea. Someone sent to me, with there name. I got to end and it let me put my name in. I think they explain it some there.
Excellent! I didn’t see the link at the end. What fun! Thanks for sharing that.
Best of luck to you Flo on Sunday! Remember, have fun too!!!!
Time to relaaaaxxxx. Got anything else planned for the the weekend, apart from a longish MP run on Sunday? Good luck with that, BTW.
Lisa, thank you! I’m planning on it (having fun, that is).
Jim, lol.
