For 3 runs this week, I had some quad pain in my right leg so I’ve been taking it easy, pacewise.  The weather helped with that, a big mush of snow came down one day and then it was just plain friggin’ cold for the others, so I’ve had no problem keeping it calm.   I also foam rollered the crap out of it which worked wonderfully, drawing out that exquisite pain that no amount of Stick or hand manipulation can replicate.

Yesterday I was back to my resilient self, not a twinge to be had, so today I’ve got 9 with some strides on tap, then tomorrow, along with a blessedly warmer day they’re promising,  I’ll do a tempo run, which I haven’t done since December!

I’d been so good doing both a tempo and interval session weekly during my 5K cycle but in this “between” period it morphed into one interval/fartlek/steady state or progression a week.  I have no regrets about this, I firmly believe that there is a time and place to put the pedal to the metal and between cycles isn’t it.  In fact, considering I started on this 7-day/week running at the top of January, I guess we can officially call this period basebuilding.

Funny to think that back in November, I declared I’d be aiming for 45-50 mi/week, though in my heart of hearts, I figured I’d be closer to 45 than 50.  Now I’m looking at 60 for my average and it doesn’t feel like I’ve even increased the load.

I’m embracing the idea of keeping mileage at a level where, when I go into marathon training again, there’s nothing to have to build beforehand, just make the long runs longer and add specificity to the quality work.  I suppose it does take out one of the potential growth elements, but at the same token, removes one of the potential injury elements, so I think it’s a valid plan.

Quasi-basebuilding aside, next week marks 12 weeks to my goal Half, so it’s time to get back into serious work mode.   I still have no idea what pace I’ll be shooting for, so it’s all a big fat question mark.

Speaking of fat, my weightloss slowed down for a while there, which I believe was a result of not eating enough.  I’m now targeting 2000 calories/day which seems to have kicked the weight-loss back into gear.   I’m loving the results so far, I’ve lost 7.5 pounds so far and my body looks better than it ever has.  No lie.

I’ve settled on 114 lbs. as my final goal – Glover’s magic number for my height and one I think will suit my small frame quite well.   That means I’ve got 5 lbs. left to go, which seems like no biggie but it’s weird, because I never planned on losing 12.5 lbs. and if I thought of it that way, would have been freaked out at the prospect. Now, it’s like having a huge unopened Xmas present waiting for my hot little hands to unwrap.  What will the final speed gains be?

The anticipation is heavenly.

Congrats on the weight loss!! That is an awesome feeling!! Over the last year, I have managed to lose about 17lbs. I have only 5 more to go myself. Unfortunately, all to often I fall prey to not eating enough and then I can’t fuel my runs. I am working on that this year!

I glad to hear that your quad is nothing serious. I don’t have any injuries but man am I tired. Gotta love that foam roller. Right now I am in about my third week of sticking to the plan and it is awesome! I am looking at about 20-25 miles this week. I have not done that in a LONG time!!! I think I should be able to make some great strides to conquering my next race, a 10 miler. I just hope I don’t get test anxiety!!!

I hope you have a great weekend of sun and fast runs!

  • 7-day weeks are great for getting the miles up, aren’t they?
Please show us some pics of your new svelte self soon.
Need a goal for that half? Join me in the 1:30s, I dare ya!

Christi, that’s fantastic! That’s a lotta weight to have lost, I’m sure those last 5 will leave the building before too long, especially with your new workout plan, which sounds like it’s going swimmingly. Congrats on the return to mileage, you’ll get through a 10-mile race with bells on!

Jim, totally right about 7 days and mileage. It adds up fast that way! Lol, you will definitely get pics, maybe even a bikini shot. We’ll see how bold stupid I am when all is said and done. As for that Half goal, it’d be disingenuous of me to pretend I haven’t put 1:39:59 in my sites. (h) We’ll see how it goes…

  • Jackie:

Flo, I remember you (virtually) rolling your eyes at Glover’s target weight for you. So nice to hear that it will become a reality and you’re good with that. 60 mpw and not feeling the load must be wonderful. I hit 59 and I really don’t think I can do much more so major kudos to you. Have a great rest of the day and “enjoy” that tempo. I GET to do mine tonight. Keep up the good work woman XO Jackie

  • Flo:

Lol Jackie, I forgot but yeah, I did totally roll my eyes thinking 114 was a ridiculous stretch. It’s funny how losing weight becomes so much easier when it’s a secondary instead of primary goal.

Now girl, I know you’d be able to up that mileage if you wanted to, no doubt about it, you’re a wonderful runner with a body that’s behaving as it should. Bet it’s just a matter of time. :) Have a great tempo tonight (lol, that you get to do) and many XOs right back at you, doll!!

  • Dave:

I remember reading an article somewhere that for every lb. that you lose you would gain 3 sec/mile. Don’t know if that is true or not or at least acurate enough, but weight loss does make you go faster.
I think we are both looking forward to the benefits of that!

  • Flo:

Dave, yeah, that’s what the calculator at runningforfitness.org says as does my Daniel’s spreadsheet. I think they may be right – I’ll be able to attach a finite number to it once I begin speedwork again. Congrats to you, btw, sounds like you’ve lost about 14lbs already, right? Have you noticed a big speed increase since beginning that?

  • doggie poo:

it is taking me FOREVER to get that last 1-2lbs off!
Though I admit, yesterday I fell off the wagon and it ran me over.
    Oh well.
If I was a betting dog, I’d say you’re easily gonna go sub 1:45 and I dont think 1:39 is outa the question. (it would also qualify you for NYC)

  • Making note of that picture posting comment. Remember you can never be too stupid about posting pictures. I just posted pictures from todays race, which I was stupid to mention.

Great job on the weight loss. Your such a great runner to think I knew you back when…

  • Flo:

Doggie, yeah, the last pounds are always a bear.

    Bruce
, those are some wild pictures! It looks like you’re on the North Pole. What a toughie to run on that. Major kudos to you!
