Hey folks, just a quickie since it was a bland day running-wise. Did 6 recovery this morning. I wore my heart-rate monitor for the first time in months and had the lowest average HR I’ve ever recorded on a run, which almost made up for everybody passing me (recovery runs can be embarrassing that way). I do wonder, though, how people who do heartrate training as a long-term method can stand to wear those plastic straps for every summer run, much less 20-milers. Ich.
Tomorrow is a day off from running and a much needed trip to the beach with Nick and our friends Lara and Jeff, where I will show off my runner’s farmer’s tan, which couldn’t be more ridiculous. I’ve got a permanent sports bra on top, shorts on the bottom and those goofy white feet. Last year I cared. I even bought some self-tanner to attempt to fill in the holes, but this year I really don’t give a shit. What a relief.
Looks like the next few days are calming down as far as temperature, so that’ll be fabulous to deal with for the weekend runs. Can you believe we’re touching the end of summer already? Anyway, have great runs tomorrow for those of you on the move, otherwise, savor the day off and be a lazy bum, like me! It’s good for you, you know. Cheers, m’dears.

I love a quickie.
I should actually read your post and then comment.
Count on Bruce…
My ego takes a blow on those recovery runs too (though it shouldn’t and I should just get over myself :P ). I don’t know how anyone wears a heart rate strap for a 20-miler either.

Hey Kazz, nice to see you here!
Yeah, getting over ourselves can be tough sometimes, lol.
So you got the memo saying that the “runner’s tan” is this season’s must-have accessory then? Show those lines off with pride! Then next summer you can do all your daytime runs in bikinis….
I wear my strap for almost every run. The only times it bothers me are when it slips and I have to hitch it up. If it’s tight enough, no problem. I wore it in the marathon (which I think counts as a long run!) and got some good data for future training. But I don’t run in conditions anything like as hot and humid as you have been experiencing, so there might be a difference there. Also I’m a guy, which may also make a difference. Do sports bras (and their contents) rub against the strap?
For me, it’s the sweaty constriction factor, but now that you mention it, having to wear the bra (with it’s accompanying elastic) probably does exacerbate the annoyance, just because that’s two sweaty constrictions right next to each other.
I’m so lucky because my heart rate strap doesn’t bother me at all. In fact, sometimes when I get home I forget to take it off if I get busy doing something else. I have some weird injury going on right now so I haven’t ran since last Monday. It’s killing me as my marathon is now 17 weeks out. I’m going to use the RW 16 week program so I don’t need to officially start until next Monday. Right now, I’m debating if I should take this coming week off and really try to heal, or try to run a few miles and see how it goes. My injury is quite intriguing. It is right where my leg attaches to my pelvis. It is totally not my groin, it is “in” more. And the damnest thing is that it just got sore after an easy 7 mile run on Monday. There wasn’t any particular move that sent me screaming. So……….I’m feeling like a fat pig and very sorry for myself for not being able to run. Ugh, I’m a frickin’ bear when I can’t run. My poor clients and husband. Oh well, I just have to keep reminding myself that if I don’t heal properly, I won’t be running at all. Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox. Happy Running!
Heidi, hope that’s just a passing tweak. Luckily, it’s just the very beginning of your training, so it’s no biggie if you miss a couple runs at this point. Feel better, soon!!
