Destiny (aka Brightroom, Inc.) took care of me this race, providing one really nice race shot. That’s as common as a unicorn and slightly more useful, so yay.

A bonus was that they surreptitiously parked a video camera at the 5k mat, so for the first time I have a candid glimpse of what I look like racing. It was definitely jarring, like when you hear your voice on tape for the first time. I’m not the fluid gazelle I imagine myself to be but I’m also not horrified or embarrassed. That’s progress!
The last cool thing is just a fun, completely useless ego massage. Within the race I got an unofficial 10-mile PR (no biggie since I’ve only raced one back in 2008) but it turns out the time I hit, 1:10:19 according to the race results, comes out to an age-grade score of 80.04%. It’s raining National Class!
Of course, that one doesn’t count but it’s great motivation to do shorter races.
Last Couple Days
I won’t go into detail but I’ve had a mystery leg thing that started a couple weeks before the race. At first it was in my quad then shifted to my lower leg. No pain running or sitting but I can feel it walking or when I roll over in bed, kinda like a pinched nerve right at the top of the tibialis anterior. Because I couldn’t pinpoint or poke it, I was Googling stress fractures and thinking the worst. At the start line, I hopped up and down on it a few times just to reassure myself that it wasn’t one and thankfully, I didn’t feel a thing during the race. It was quite a downer in those preceding days though (and still is a weird worry).
With this in mind, I took the last 2 days off from running. This morning, I still had some pinchyness but went on an easy run anyway to test it…no problems! 8 miles and it felt fine. So I don’t know what’s up with it but I can only assume that since running is fine (I won’t be doing anything fast this week), it’ll eventually work itself out.

What’s Ahead
Here’s one thing I’m thinking: “Oh no, now what am I going to do to get faster? I’m doomed!” because I’m a fatalistic idiot from time to time. But this is just momentary. Sane Flo thinks it’s time to get her race hat on and go wild. As in, do a race almost every week for the next 4 or 6 weeks, whatever I can find locally. I think it’d be a fun alternative to quality work and I know it’d improve my racing chops. I did this in my Spring Of Improvement back in 2009 and that might have had something to do with said improvement (cart or horse…who knows?).
This would start in 2 weeks when there’s a sweet 5K I really like, though it was short last year and I’ve emailed the director to see if they’re remeasuring. At first I was thinking I don’t want to race anything that requires an asterisk after it, but then I started thinking more sensibly: last year at that race I won a $70 certificate for Zipcars and a gift certificate for Whole Foods, both of whom are sponsoring again, so it’d be worth it. And also, if I do multiple races, an asterisk race doesn’t really matter, I just won’t call it a PR. Because any race is more than the result, it’s an unparalleled workout that I could never replicate on my own and that’s the mindset I want to have. This will get me over Athlinks self-consciousness and the preciousness that racing rarely creates.
So that’s it for now. Later, my loves.

racing for “fun” and not caring about asterisk will be fun and do wonders for you. I’m a huge fan of race for workouts.
You’re an inspiration for lots of racing, it’s been great reading about your season with “flowy shorts” and the rest. Definitely makes it inviting seeing your results and the fun you’ve had with it.
A decent photo! Brightroom sure slipped up with that one. I hope the photographer gets off with a warning.
Doomed? Well, you’ve got the miles up, and it looks like you have been doing your core work. How about working on the (not yet) gazelle-like form? This next phase will be fun, I’m sure.
Lol, too funny Jim. As for the non-gazelle form, I wouldn’t know how to change it without hands-on coaching, but I’m fine with it anyway, it’s really not that bad. And to be honest, I haven’t been doing any core work, I had intentions but only managed a couple days of crunches – somehow I lucked out on the ab genes. But what I have just done is register for a ton of races! This is going to be very interesting…
My attitude on form- if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Yours looks great and it’s obviously serving you well.
I’m so excited about your fall racing. I think this will be a really nice change of pace for you! I agree with your and Audra’s comments about racing for a workout. I’ve been doing that for YEARS! Sometimes you just can’t match the effort. And if you can afford it, why not get a shirt and doorprize while working out? Win-win!
Hope the niggles go away soon in that leg. You are smart to take a 2 day rest.
Funny, just as you were posting this, I was reading your FB update about last weekend’s 5k (someone had just posted something on it) and thinking “Rebecca is the poster child for racing” because I have been jealous about how it’s no big deal for you, you just go out like it’s another training run. I want to get to that. Since Karyn is your mini-me, I’ll be your medium-me.
I do still have my *key* races that I actually train and taper for, and it takes a lot of mental convincing to tell yourself it’s workout. I realize that I could really beat my body up if I full-out raced every weekend without any sort of break. (Just wanted to add that in for anyone that’s reading and curious how that works.)
Great point. In my case, I’m thinking I may not do any workouts on a race week so I may be able to hit them a little harder but I’m not going to expect full bore for all. We’ll see, it’ll definitely be an experiment.
You should definitely race a lot (like every other week) this fall – there are PR’s and prizes waiting for you. Cash in while you are on a roll!

You should be my agent, Rovatti.
I don’t think many races around here have good prizes but this one dinky 5k does…go figure. But that’d be cool, it certainly adds another layer of fun to it, the idea of winning stuff.
Awesome photo! What 5k race are you running?
I’m doing 3 in October! The first one is Runnin On The River. Check out my At The Races page for the list. You should do some with me! There’s a lawyer one at Memorial Hall (Justice For All 5k)…we could meet some rich lawyers.
So wonderful!!!! You had that PR so waiting for you with all the hard work and focus in the last 8 months. I’m excited and proud and happy. :-)
Aw, thanks sweetie!
Hugs to you.
National Class!! I’m super-impressed Lady! I totally agree with Rebecca-if it ain’t broke don’t fix it:)-and just keep kicking A$$-you technically are running circles around me
Well, ya know, it’s just how they divide that stuff up, sounds good anyway. I’d rather be as fast as you for real but you’re a moving target with tons of crazy fastness ahead.
Very exciting to see where you’ll go in the coming years.
I’m in favour of fixing ‘broke’ form, but yours doesn’t look too bad. Better than about 90% of runners in that clip! You look smoother than I do — and if I got to the 5k mat in 21 and change that’d be my finish line!
Good idea to race heaps seeing you’re in such great shape. An easier paced run the day before and after and you should be fine. I like the idea of only one other speed session during the week. And I love reading 5k race reports!
Thanks Ewen! One day I’ll get someone to help me with my arms, I think those aren’t doing as much for me as they could. Lol on 5k reports, they’re blessedly shorter.
I just started reading your blog and I have to say that you are inspiring! I am a “new” runner as of January this year. I have a long way to go and I am still very slow! I am pushing 50 and would love to have your running form and I have to say your shape as well! Really, you are inspiring!
Aw thanks, Lisa, so sweet. Congratulations on becoming a runner! Be patient, that’s one of the wonderful things about running, you’re going to become fitter and faster, no doubt about it, and as you do, it’ll be even more fun. It’s win-win all the way.
