Yesterday’s run was entertaining; the first time I ever stopped on a run to take photos.  Thanks again for responding so well to the What would you like? thread, this was one of the suggestions and a fun one at that.  You’re about to see how spoiled I am and why I love running.

This is one of many bridges on my route

Look on the path near the bottom of this photo, notice a number with a line going across the path? It’s our 1/4 mile markers, they follow the 8.5 mi. loop around the museum. I ran the loop for a whole year without realizing they where there.  This is one of two spots where I do my interval sessions.

Coming back towards the city, a bit of skyline.

The back of the museum, about 3/4 mi from home.

Me, happy.

Getting Realistic

Good thoughts today, borne of a slow speed session.

First off, that remark I made about pacing someone in the previous post? Forget it, I just wanted an excuse to run slower.  Can’t blame me for trying.

Today I’m doing my speedwork (10.5mi with 6×1/2mi at 5K pace and 2min rec’s) and I couldn’t get moving fast, maybe due to lack of sleep, I could only manage 3:27s (6:55 pace) and though I felt I was working hard, my HR averaged 83%HRR on the fast parts and only maxed to 89% on one, so it was more like 10k effort.  When a workout goes like that, you have two choices: A. berate yourself or B. accept it was your best on that day and be happy with it.  I chose B.

I tend to get very philosophical while in the midst of a hard workout, though I think about the way my body’s moving and my form and footfall, I’ll also have bursts where I look for meaning in running and how I fit in.  It’s a helpful distraction from “how much longer” “where’s the end?” “almost half way” “shit, too slow” “where’s the end?!?”

Today’s thought was how we’re all unique within this sport.  We each have something about us that makes our running adventure special, unlike anyone else’s and when we’re stalled or questioning ourselves, it’s worth taking the time to remember those things.

I’m always comparing myself to my faster online friends, many of whom are enjoying continued speediness, while I seem to be on the two steps forward, one step back plan.  Why do I conveniently manage to forget that I’m a 48 year old woman?  I’ve got no right to ever feel sorry for myself.  To that end, I punched my Half PR in an age-grade calculator to see what it’d be for a 35 year-old man…1:16.  I have nothing to complain about.

Let The Goal Appear

I’ve been trying to fit numbers into a goal, but really, that’s ass-backwards.  The goal needs to come from the numbers.  I’m slower than last cycle, and while I’ve been boo-hooing about it, if I could manage to be objective and enjoy what I have instead of thinking wistfully of what I don’t, it’d make for a better 10 weeks coming up.

You know what a mental case I am, well I have a 5-mile race next week and a Half in March and I was fretting over what sort of times I can expect – especially from the 5-miler since I haven’t raced in months.   But after my speed session today and a dose of logical thinking, I thought, what will happen if I come back with a bad result?  Does that make me stupid?  A bad runner?  Not a good person?  I don’t think so.  Interesting how much crap from the universe we can subconsciously attach to a race time.

Tomorrow

We’re expecting 10 to 20″ of snow tomorrow with high winds, so I’ll likely take the day off – no loss, it was a recovery run anyway.  In the morning I’ll be adding 10 new designs to The Gifted Runner, woohoo!

OK, have a good Wednesday and cheers to my snow buddies across the Eastern seaboard. Stay safe and warm, everyone.

  • What a pretty route, I love the bridge.
And I can’t wait to see the new designs, I linked to The Gifted Runner on my blog yesterday, there is a shirt I’m coveting…actually, a few. ;)

  • Todd:

Ditto to Allie’s comment about the new designs. Glad your running is going well. My knee is playing come cat-and-mouse with me. I need to dive in headlong to a hip strengthening routine and quit being a bitch…

    • Flo:

Sorry to hear about the knee. Lol, it’s understandable being a bitch, who wants to add more exercises on top of running? But it sounds like it’s your best bet getting back 100%.

  • RJR:

Wow, you all did get a bunch of snow.

1:16!? Dang. You should punch in your potential goal marathon times into that calculator too. It might give you a little mental boost that will help you through training.

    • Flo:

Actually 1:15:40 (but who’s quibbling?) lol. My marathon PR equates to a 2:52 for a 35 year old guy but it didn’t make me feel better at the time. I think it does now though. :)

  • wow that’s a lot of snow. i can totally appreciate the beauty in the photo though despite hating it in real life haha. and i totally love how unique running is to everyone as well. there is a reason to celebrate for anyone :)

  • Each happy runner is happy in her own way. I had similar thoughts during my 19:47 tempo run on the track this morning but working through the mental thing is an important aspect of speedwork.

My suggestion is that you use the five to get accustomed to wearing a number and feeling what it’s like to race again and base your Boston goal on how you do in the HM.

I ran along that path several times when I spent a month in Philadelphia one day.

  • Thanks for posting your running route. It’s so pretty! I’m jealous!

    CJ

    • Flo:

I’m sorry, I feel guilty because I know so many of you run on busy roads or where there’s nothing to see. I give you folks huge kudos because it really makes it easier to get out when there’s a dedicated area (and usually lots of really cute runners and cyclists out, too ;) )

  • Awesome pictures! I hope you appreciate that route! It’s great! I would love to post pics of my routes, but it’s hard to operate a camera when you are dodging traffic and rabid dogs. LOL.

  • Ewen:

Thanks for the pics Flo. It looks beautiful, but cold! How civilised that they plow the snow off your running track.

Even two steps forward and one back is moving forward! As a late bloomer, I can see you running outright PBs for another 5 years. Then there are the age-group wins to look forward to. On the Boston goal, as Joe said, the HM time and how the race goes will give you a good idea.

Don’t forget to check out the latest video from our Dutch friend Rinus. You get a mention in English!

    • Flo:

Thanks so much saying that about potential PBs in the next few years. My logical brain believes it but my emotional one has been a suspicious doubter lately.

Loved Rinus’ video, thanks for directing me to it, lots of English, yay! And how cute that he mentions me and Julie. Thanks for letting me know.

  • runforlife20:

Nice pics…I think you captured our stomping grounds well! Well, off for 10 now :)

    • Flo:

Have a great run, let me know how the path looks.

      • runforlife20:

You should go out! The west river was plowed very well and the kelly wasn’t but I think they are working on it right now. there was only about 6 inches of snow because sleet has been coming down for the past few hours, but I think heavy snow is due for later, so if you go out I would do it earlier rather than later.

Also funny how it took you so long to recognize the numbers on the path. I despise them b/c they make me count so I love this weather and not being able to see them :)

        • Flo:

Thanks for the report! I’m working on some stuff so I can’t leave for awhile but I planned it as a snow day anyway – it’d be my first unscheduled day off for the cycle – so maybe I’ll just enjoy the slothdom. Or will guilt get me? We shall see…

          • runforlife20:

lol…it’s so intense outside now…i really like the new designs especially the first one (may have to buy it)

  • Those are great photos. That’s the Philly Distance run course, right? I am so jealous that you have a nice place to run in the midst of all this snow. Keep up the great word, and BTW, I loved “URL in Motion” blog title!

    • Flo:

Bingo, you are correct! Distance run and also some of the Marathon.

Speaking of, I’m super excited to finally meet you at Shamrock. Woohoo!!

  • Jenn:

I miss running outside on that route :( I’m such a cold-weather wimp. I miss seeing the same people every morning out on my runs and yeah, it’s a pretty route back and forth when you lift yourself out of “how much longer” mode. This snow is killing me! You’re fortunate to live within walking distance from the Drive.

And I just had to say — 48? Seriously, I am not flattering you but 48? I.had.no.idea.

    • Flo:

You may not be flattering me but ya just did! :D Thanks girlfriend. It’s on my About page. You’re right, I’m totally lucky to live so close to the park. That’s why when I move from this dump I’ll be staying in the area, I can’t imagine having to run on city streets all the time. Come move up here by me, I’ll pull out the Bernina and we can do crafts together! :-)

  • What a great path! I can’t believe it’s plowed – what I would give for that around here! You lucky girl!

    • Flo:

I know, we’re so lucky it’s a priority for the Parks Dept. They’re really chintzy on water fountains (remove them for most of the year) but the plowing? Heaven.

  • Looks like a very scenic route. Lots of pretty sites to motivate you along the way. That snow looks a little chilly tho :)

  • Nice snaps. Maybe I’ll do a travelogue as well.

My advice on that five miler: Go in with no expectations. Just focus on running your best. You may be surprised by the results. I was last weekend.

    • Flo:

Congrats again on the fabu race, I hope to be that nicely surprised. Definitely take some photos, it’s fun and cool to see everybody’s route.

  • Nice pics, Flo. That does look like a nice running path. Do you have to run far to get there? As for Boston, do your worrying early and use it to focus on what’s needed (hills, etc). You’ll be fine.
I like the thought of continuing to improve for a few years. We started about the same time. It does seem that we have to work harder for those PRs now. The age thing is double edged. Sometimes I like to look at my age-corrected results, but mostly I try to ignore it because of the implied limits. OK, so I’m equivalent to a sub-3 marathon, but I sure would like to do it for real someday.

    • Flo:

It’s only a mile to the park, so not far at all.

I know what you’re saying about the age-corrected results and the fact that it’s like X:XX doesn’t make it be that, so you’re right not to pay too much attention to it. Though it does come in handy when you’re comparing yourself to all those younger cats and feeling a little “less than” (if you ever do that).

And there is no doubt in my mind you will get that sub3, Jim. You’re on your way.

  • I love your pics and special the “Me happy” pic!.
Nice to run there and looks a litle on ” het Amsterdamse bos” (park and wood near Amsterdam).
I thing you are younger and you looks more 38.
Good running and a lot of snow.
Thanks for your respons on my Bemore movie run and you can see on the movie no snow, but now Wednesday a day later 5 cm snow!!!.
I begin to hate snow and now 7 weeks cold and most time snow and not good for running.
Next time better and more sun and heat..

Good work Flo and nice blog to read, even for the dutch Rinusrunning ;-).

  • Thanks for posting the pictures, I always love to see pictures of where others run.

  • I love the pics posted of your running grounds.

  • I am finally getting around to catching up on my blog reading and leaving comments. First of all, love the pics! I’ve run on that path and you are so lucky to have that nearby.

Don’t beat yourself up about paces. We all have good days and bad days. And then there are the just blah days. Sounds like a good workout though. I’ve done that age grading to make myself feel better, too. I agree with Ewen, you’ve got lots more PB’s tucked away as you work your way up the AG ladder.
