How cavalier I was when last I left you folks, spouting this little morsel, “Going out for 4 today and will keep it at 4 for the next couple days” After I returned from my run I realized that running 4 days in a row is reckless when you’re repairing yourself, so I took yesterday off. It rained all day anyway, so I wasn’t that tempted.
The UPS guy brought my ankle brace, which I like quite a lot – it’s a lace-up one, so I feel like a boxer in it. It works, too! Started my run today with my usual trepidation of “how bad is this going to feel and for how long?” but the discomfort disappeared sooner than it has for the last few runs, so I did 5 miles at my pre-injured easy pace of 8:49. What a relief.
There’s a huge regatta going on in my stomping ground, so it was a lively run, maneuvering around people, boats, and people carrying boats. I passed by this one girl who was running and reading at the same time, which deserved a double-take because I could have sworn it was a paperback, but I was too shy to turn around and check it out.
It reminded me of my diving days when, on an especially deep dive that requires a long decompression stop (to rid your body of nitrogen so you don’t get the bends), some people bring books to read while they’re hanging there. Clever idea, since holding onto a rope mid-water for an hour or more is the most boring non-activity in the world, though I always imagined the pages floating away so never tried it. That said, I’m not even tempted to read while running.
Anyway, I feel like I’m officially on the mend which means the next order of business will be revisiting my marathon plan starting point, but first…vacation!! We’re going out West in a couple weeks for a 12-day sojourn; doing the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Moab, Polygamist Sect National Parks tour.
Our first activity that is already reserved (and I am terrified of) is an all-day mule ride through the Grand Canyon. The mules walk perilously close to the edges of cliffs you wouldn’t dare hike on foot, so eeeeek!! They say they haven’t lost a mule yet, which should be heartening, though how can one not respond with, “there’s always a first time.”
Looking forward to seeing what running holds for me out West. I’ve been told Yellowstone has plenty of bears so it’s not a good idea to run there, but I’m sure every place will be different. Nick is so cute, he’s promised to ride along side me on a rented bike and if that’s not available, by car. Payback will be me on a bike in Moab, the bicyclist’s mecca, with a smile on my face and no comments like, “yeah, biking’s ok, but not half as fun as running”. What we do for love.

Have fun riding an ass. Ok that was lame. I just got back from Cleveland Marathon expo and wrote a expo report. I was thinking you how much you love expo’s
Yay Brucie!! Sounds like a cool expo with the running celebs there.
Have a fantastic race tomorrow! Looking forward to reading all the details, both funny and sweatingly real. Behave yourself and don’t purposely trip anyone you don’t know.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!
Flo–
They don’t recommend it if you are afraid of heights. However, once I got over the initial panic, it was exhilarating. (Was sore for a couple of days, but worth it!) I hope you enjoy your time out there!
The Ball and Chain and I did the mule ride into the canyon eons ago on our honeymoon. It was the best! What a way to see the canyon! I had wanted to do it ever since I saw it on The Brady Bunch! Every time you stop they make you face the mule INTO the canyon, because if you face them into a wall of rock cliff, they may be tempted to back up.
Lol, I was just talking to Lara about it last night and she said the same thing about the Brady Bunch, even acted out the scene were Bobby is yelling “Cindy” into the canyon and it echoes. I feel so deprived to have missed this.
Very cool to hear you actually did it (and lived to tell the tale). I don’t like heights, but I’m going to do it because I skip a lot of scary things, I need to start doing a few.
sounds like a great trip you have planned. Im soo jealous. Havent been on a proper vacation since before Nicholas was concieved and he will be 3 in June so that gives you an idea.
I can’t wait until he’s older and a better traveler! There are so many places I dream of us going as a family
have a blast and email me some pics just to rub it in if you get a minute here and there
Actually both Cindy and Bobby were lost in the Grand Canyon so everyone was yelling “Cindy”…”Bobby” and their voices were echoing off the canyon. I hope you’ll reenact it while you’re there!
Just wanted to de-lurk and say hi, Flo! Good luck with your ankle (I’m nursing a twisted ankle myself), and have fun on vacay – that mule ride sounds kind of like a recipe for a disaster (which often leads to lots of fun!).
Matt, you deserve a holiday! You’re going to have such fun doing the family vacations, though for some reason I get the impression they might conveniently coincide with marathons in cool locales.
Lara, oops! That’s why I can’t tell jokes or stories, I always screw up whatever I hear and hand it back wrong. Too many uncontrolled substances get to a gal’s brain after awhile.
Kai! Thanks for delurking!! That’s so cool. Sorry to hear your ankle is twisted, though. Hope you get back to normal asap, and if you haven’t got a brace, I highly recommend one. OMG, just went to your blog and now I must have bread pudding right this instant, that looks tooo delicious!
For what its worth, I got my race report up. Hopefully some pictures in the next few days.
Bruce, I was just replying to it when you posted this. I’d been looking for your report since yesterday after seeing your timing had stopped near the start of the race. So happy it was the chip and not you that was coming undone. Sucks though. You deserve a big fat break for the next one!
Flo,
All I have to say is ride that ass, and ride it hard!
Have a good vacation
Flo, I just wanted to ask – is there a certain brand/type of ankle brace you use? Do you wear it while running/walking, or just at home?
Hah Dan, I see you’re an ass man.
The things you learn on the interwebs.
Kai, first I got a cheap no-frills neoprene wrap from the drugstore, which helped for around the house and some walking but I didn’t try to run with it. I ordered this one and have run in it a couple times now. It works great. My ankle’s improved enough now that I only need the brace for running.
Geetah from the RW forums mentioned in some old posts (because I searched anything related to this for days) the he uses a lace-up from Walmart that’s $8, so you could try there. Additionally, the crazy foot doctor I saw last week recommends this one as being the most comfortable one in a running shoe, but I’d already ordered my Swede-o in the meantime and I’m satisfied with it.
Now I feel impatient. I didnt come undone till later in race.
