Mission accomplished – sub 45 was mine. I have to wait for the online results because, as usual, I didn’t turn off my Garmin till after the major heaving was over, but it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 44:4X (44:48). I won first in my AG and I think I was the 7th Female was 8th female. I’ll correct this stuff when I’ve got the facts. But here’s how it went down…

I woke up to a layer of snow outside, which instantly put me in anxiety mode (like I wasn’t already). I dealt with it by making coffee and immediately looking for more races in the next few weeks to make up for this one. It helped, I was in a good mood when I left the house and got in an even better one when I realized the snow hadn’t stuck to the sidewalks or paths. Whew.

I jogged over to the race start (3/4 miles away) carrying an additional light jacket with me just in case I needed it, though I ended up wearing only my UA compression mock, tights, hat and gloves – perfect. The temp was windchill 25 with 8-11mph wind (not bad) and a few flurries. My discovery this winter was that as long as I have hat and gloves, I can get away with wearing very little in a chilly race.

Speaking of comfort, last night I’d figured out what the deal is with my foot, it’s an inflamed bursa sac (basically a blister underneath the skin at the joint). So I took some moleskin and I made a little donut to go around the hot spot which worked beautifully, my foot felt great the entire race. This is a huge relief in general, worried as I was about next week’s running but I’ll be totally fine.

Anyway, I did a mile warmup with 3 strides and found my friends Matt, Marianne and Charlie (always a good time with those folks). A quick chat and then time to race.

My splits were
7:07
7:15
7:11
7:07
7:02
7:16
And whatever the last .21 was (hmmm…splits are off because I know I didn’t kick in at 9min/mile)

For those that care, my HR averaged 179 (87% HRR ) with a max of 184 (91% HRR).

Through the entire race, I was behind this friendly guy I see often on my runs who always says “hi” when we pass. He and the guy trailing him were the carrots that kept me going, so it was fun afterwards to introduce myself and admit I was the incessant wheezing he couldn’t escape.

Apres race my friends and I compared notes and ate bananas. I also had the pleasure of talking to Kev, the guy that started the Philly Runners and is creator of this crazy mile time trial I did last year. So it was one of those social mornings that make me love running all the more. As if that were possible.

Now I’m awaiting this huge-ass snow storm we’re supposed to have…8-14 inches! That means tomorrow’s a day off for sure, which I got no problem with – I just had a 4-minute PR within the span of 4 months. The ole gal deserves a day of rest. ;)

  • Ooh – first to comment to say holy smokes you rock girl. Awesome – can’t wait to see what happens with your HM time.

  • mirnr:

Yeah!!! You rock!!! Enjoy the 8 – 14″!

  • John:

    Congratulations on a great race!

  • doggie poo:

    AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!
Girl, you are having such an awesome year and we’re just getting started!

  • Rebecca (LA Runner):

Way to smoke it!!!!! I can’t believe a 4 MINUTE PR!!!!

  • SD Chargers:

Great Race! (I’ve been lurking on the sub-1:40 half forum for a while, but waiting until I’m closer to you speedsters before I start posting there).

Just discovered your blog and find it very entertaining and relatable.

Keep posting the great times (and blog entries), and hopefully I’ll be joining you, MickC, Haank and the gang once I get my times in order!

  • Good job Flo. I hereby appoint you my online 10K nemesis, since you’re ahead of me now. Were there some gradients on the course, as suggested by the variation in the split times? If so, even better!

  • sara:

congratulations!!! a 4 minute PR is HUGE! sounds like you rocked it out there!

(and since i’m a complete sissy who lives in LA, can i give you extra props for running in 25 degree windchill? good luck getting me to leave the house in those temperatures.)

can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds for you! congrats again :)

  • When writing a good drama its best to put the results at the end so people dont know the outcome before they start.

    PS great job!

  • Nice even pacing. That can be tough, especially when running a PR. That you went out as fast as you did an held it with no problem (relatively speaking) says that you’re coming along very, very well.

  • Flo:

    Thanks so much everyone!!

Jim, there are some ups and downs in various places as well as windier spots on the route. Also, I was doing my best to keep up with those two guys in front, so when they surged on the way back, I hung on for dear life.

SD Chargers, don’t be shy, there are some people involved in the thread that aren’t at the goal yet but they’ll get there, just like you will!! Say hi, everybody’s real cool.

Joe, thanks, though I had to laugh as my first mile went by and I was all “this feels great, I’ll just hold 7:06 till the end”. Yeah, right. 8-)

  • Wow! Flo! You’re getting so much faster!

I’m with Joe — that pacing says it all. You were running well, not over- or underdoing it. Breaking 45 is a major milestone. I hope you bask in the glory for a few days at least.

Congratulations on the AG #1 award too. I see many more of these in your future.

  • Flo:

Thanks so much Julie! Now if only I can get over the fear that these past months were a fluke of some sort, I’ll be able to relax. :-)

  • Jackie:

Amazing Race Flo! Congratulations again! Glad the hard work is showing itself in these races. Keep up the good work woman!

  • Jack Daniel has said that if you run a race in a particular tie you ran the race in a particular time (25 mph tailwinds excepted). You are capable of doing it. It’s no fluke.

  • Kazz:

Congratulations, Flo! Look at those splits…dayum! You were right on the money the whole way. Great job.

  • Flo:

Thanks Jackie and Kazz, you sweet things!!

Joe, thanks for the “no fluke” pump up. :)

  • Christi:

Congratulations Flo!!! Great race and great RR!
