Zippy run in the rain today – my Hydrolite jacket came through in a big way, really made it an enjoyable run. Seven miles @ 8:14.
About an hour after I got home, though, I’m in the kitchen and I hear a sound like some tiny alarm coming from my office, and realize it’s my Garmin beeping non-stop. The screen was also flashing frenetically, switching datascreens back and forth like it was having a seizure. I took it off the cradle, turned it off and on again, then the buttons wouldn’t work. I can only turn it off now with a soft reset (mode+Lap). Hard reset doesn’t work either. Oh, my sweet Garmin, what have I done to you?
I have to send it back and possibly receive a refurbished one in return. That would be so very sad, as much as we’ve been through together. In the meantime, I have a 205 (bought as backup when the 405 was released and 205s went cheap) so I’m fine pacewise, but my recent addiction to HR data must be shelved temporarily. Probably a healthy thing in a way.
Tomorrow, I’d planned to do 17 but am now just sticking with 16, because that’ll give me 72 miles for the week, a new mileage PR, so I’m happy to cap it there. It’s funny how I used to think 70mpw would be this huge, hard thing, something I couldn’t imagine ever wanting to do, but once you start adding a few here and a few there, it just grows on you.
The best part about it is, I was feeling a few twinges after March’s races, a couple of times I had to get out the foam roller, but then between last week’s 68 and this week’s 72 I feel great! My legs are silent. Last time I had a day off was March 2nd, so things couldn’t be better (knock on wood).
So I’m thinking about after the Lehigh Valley Half, how I should handle the months before marathon training begins in August. I put a few potential races on the calendar for June and one for July, so that’ll keep me peppy. I’m not sure how I’m going to portion out fast and easy runs at this point but I did want to cultivate 70mpw, and at this point, it looks like it’ll be no problem.

WOW! 72 for the week… I am nowhere near that right now, but the funny thing is that I look forward to it.
And I do not know what I would do if my Garmin had an emergency like that… did it get too wet?
Watch out, You can get hooked on 70+. I’m supposed to be tapering this week (about 50) didn’t keep count for a few days, and ended up at 77. D’oh!
Hats off and a moment of silence for the Garmin buddy. I’m awed that you have a spare!
Great job on the mileage PR! Sorry about the Garmin. I have the 205 and it’s great! As long as your heart is beating, why worry? Thanks for the lookout about the antibiotics. I’m watching my tendons like a hawk and will most likely not finish the whole bottle. Great running!
oh pour some on the curb for the garmin!!!
wow, 72 miles? Are you running 6 days? That’s my one bit thing about going up milage wise, I like my 2 days off.
Runwithhim, I think the rain was the problem (must have snuck in the housing) because it’s working now! Woohoo!
Jim, that’s some taper, lol. :-)
Rebecca, “As long as your heart is beating, why worry?” Agreed!
Doggie, 6 days? Then I’d have had a day off by now…7 days baby!
It looks like you could be on schedule for a new half PR on May 3rd! I wish you the best. For many years my wife Nancy and I ran the half. She still does and now I do the photography for the event. Will you be attending the pasta party to hear Bart Yasso speak?
Here are some highlights from last year’s event: http://photosbyjohn.net/2008lvhalfsunday.aspx
Love the photos John! Thanks for that, it totally pumped me up. Yep to the pasta dinner, looking forward to it!
Poor Garmin. Mine refused to start up the other day, so I think it’s on its last legs. (An excuse to upgrade to the 310XT in June.)
72 is a good number to hit. For lots of people, 70mpw (or more) consistently is the thing that moves them to a new level of fitness.
Is there anything you don’t like about the Hydrolite jacket? I’ve been considering it, but I’ve been burned by jackets that tout themselves as being “breathable” when they’re not.
Yeah, the new Garmin’s look interesting, to be sure. Thanks for confirmation on the mileage, I’ve had a few words today with someone on the sub 1:40 thread who considers 70+ to be “hyper” mileage and was chiding me for it. Lol. It’s merely decent mileage for someone wanting to get to the level I’m seeking (as you, my girl, know all too well).
Well, no jacket is going to be as breathable as natural fiber one, but compared to my Asics Stormjacket which touts itself as breathable, it’s much more so. Seriously, I was surprised to be able to wear it in 49 degrees yesterday and could even wear it in low 50s if I went sleeveless. I didn’t unzip it the whole run but I did scrunch up the sleeves (which is why my Garmin temporarily drowned, I guess). Backcountry still has the old model (one I have) on sale if you’re interested. I really do like it.
Great pics, John. That looks like a smooth start for a such a big field. Everyone lines up by pace?
My Brooks jacket is nice and breathable, but does not stop heavy rain (slows it down a fair bit). I think a Hydrolite is on the shopping list before the next rainy season, but that site does not seem to have any Hydrolites for men.
Thanks for the shopping tip! I wasn’t quite ready to drop $100 on it, but for $70 I could be convinced.
Re: mileage — now you know why, among other reasons, I don’t hang around on the RW boards. They reflect the magazine’s readership. It’s not their fault, really — RW presents things as “gospel” that are simply untrue, such as needing to only run six days per week, you must take in carbohydrates during long runs and races, if you run more than 70mpw you’ll get injured, etc.
Poppycock, I say!
That’s why I like the weekly women’s training thread on LetsRun.com. Those ladies are hardcore.
Julie, in RW’s defense, the Marathon Race Training board is chock full of high mileage runners, so I consider that my main home, it’s just this Half thread where I’m the lone high mileage person. Thanks for reminding me about the Letsrun women’s thread, I’ll peek in there again.
Jim, sorry about the gender bias
, I haven’t seen a sale version for men or I’d lead you to it, for sure.
