As it turns out, Wednesday’s shithole ended up being a pretty cute apartment with a great layout. The only thing “eh” about it was the industrial blue wall-to-wall carpeting, but I can live with that. It’s just a couple blocks away which’ll make it easy for Nick and I to share some dinners and TV watching.   It’s also as close to Fairmount Park as I am now and still only a few blocks walk to the start line for most of the races around here.  With all that in mind, I dropped off my application this morning and should hear in a few days whether I got it or not.

As for running,  today’s workout was a little over 8 miles with 2x15min.@GHP w/1min rec.  I wore my HR monitor because it was a Half Pace workout and I’m doing a Half in 5 weeks, so I made a deal that I wouldn’t chide myself for a higher avg HR (guaranteed due to the weather) as long as it didn’t show a sharp constant rise, which would mean an unsustainable pace.

I was aiming between 7:05 and 7:10 and was happily surprised to average 7:03s.  My HR was not bad either (83%HRR) – lower than the slower tempos preceding my May Half when the weather was great.  Makes up for the uninspired 4x5min@10k pace I did on Tuesday.  Guess I’m making progress after all, despite feeling like I’m dog paddling these days.

In unrelated news, my best friend Simon has a small part in  “Julie and Julia”, the movie with Meryl Streep playing Julia Child. You can see him in this clip, he’s in the grey jacket (next to the lady in the red dress) asking a question of Meryl. We met 30 years ago in musical theater school and lived together for many years in NYC, so we’ve a long history together. Anyway, so proud of the boy, as always.

More hugs to you wonderful readers with such big hearts, giving me all that positive support in your comments for the previous post. What did I do before blogging?

OK, have a great weekend everyone, run well and drink up! I want to see clear pee from each and every one of you!  Well, not actually see it, but make it so. (h)

  • One of my brothers-in-law is a NY actor and, as such, periodically appears in “Law and Order.” He was once shot dead (as Strunk and White would have it) before the opening “Ba-Boom” although unlike many victims he actually had some lines — he was a pedophile — first.

Oh, and I must say your training appears to be coming along quite well, particularly in these August days. Doesn’t FedEx say you can’t use its envelopes to ship liquids? My mother-in-law said that chocolate milk is a great post-run replemisher and I’ve seen that reported elsewhere so that’s become my incoming liquid of choice.

  • Hope the apartment application goes through OK.
You’re doing 7:03 for GHP in the heat? Good Job, Flo!

I’ve heard good things about chocolate milk, too. Sometime soon I’ll get some and give it a try.

  • Mir:

Oh Flo, I’m so sorry to hear about you and Nick. (((Flo))) But I’m glad the apartment sounds like it’ll do for you, and it sounds like you’re soldiering on with your usual gusto. HMP of 7:03? ::dies of jealousy:: I will be sure and work on my hydration, just for you! :)

I too am a chocolate milk fan. Lately I’ve been all about chocolate soymilk.

  • black bear:

Oooo chocolate milk. My fav is the Lil Milk in the boxes. The perfect size for after a long run. With a brown sugar and cinnaminmin poptart! http://www.buythecase.net/product/10749/parmalat_lil_milk_longlife_2_reduced_fat_chocolate_milk_8_oz/?engine=googlebase

I hope you get the apt. BTB, I hear industrial flooring is all the rage. My friends just did their kitchen floor in rubber.

  • Jennrageous:

Damn Flo, sorry about things with your man. I have to say I am impressed at the level of sanity you both seem to be exhibiting. Best of luck with the new place. Weather was better today than on Wednesday, I felt like I needed a straw to breathe. The light breeze today helped… ~OK going to get some water now~

See you on the drive… As always ;)

  • jhowdy:

Nice workout, I get to try the same one this coming Friday. I won’t be in the 7:03 range, probably closer to :20 right now. I also get a “2″ minute recovery on the Level 2!

Hope the deal goes thru on the new place. Just envision how that industrial blue wall to wall will look with all your out of town virtual running friends camping out on it when in town for PDR and the marathon! :)

  • Ewen:

That’s good. Very handy to be within warm-up distance of race starts!

Very cool for your friend to have a part opposite Meryl (and getting to have dinner at the same time). He pulled off the accent well.

Nice training too – 7:03s for a half – speedy!

  • Barb:

Yay on the new place – I’ll keep my fingers and toesies crossed that you get it! You know, a nice rug will pull the place together (and help hide that hideous blue carpet.)

+1 to loving chocolate milk. Love my “Over the Moon;” it’s fat-free but doesn’t taste like it (and I don’t see anything scary in the list of ingredients – I’m putting my fingers in my ears and singing “La la la” so as not to think about it too hard).

Color me green with envy, too, over your goal HMP! That’s faster than my 5K PR pace. You continue to amaze me.

  • Glad you were able to find a place that you like. I also hope it isn’t too much of an adjustment to you living alone now. Also, I really admire that the two of you are going to remain friends. I WISH all my exes would live in Texas. LOL. Great job on the run, too!
