Since this week is so stark as far as running, I don’t have a lot to chat about, so I’ll take this time to mention the cool emails we Steamtowners have been getting from the Race Director. He’s quite a funny guy, so it’s a pleasure whenever one of these hits my inbox.
I might have mentioned this in a comment but not on a regular post that we’ve been warned (and this is actually not a joke) not to pee on Forest City High School. Last year a couple ladies were found doing this, despite the huge number of porta-potties around the start line. I was pretty impressed that they could pee on a school (I don’t think they were on the roof) though I shouldn’t be surprised since my standing-up experiment does allow for horizontal aiming. Btw, I neglected to mention that the second time I tried this method (while on our road trip out west) I wasn’t half as successful, so I won’t be using it again in future.
Another interesting thing is we’ve been alerted that Bill and Hillary Clinton will be in Scranton on race day for a baptism. My thoughts never even came close to, “Oh cool, the Clintons” which I would have under ordinary circumstances. Instead my only thoughts were, “They better keep their damn motorcade away from our race!!” Visions of Secret Service Men tackling the crazy-eyed runner who just rolled over the hood of their car on an unstoppable mission…
As far as taper goes, I’m actually doing great with the running less aspect of it. I never wanted a break during the cycle, but I’ve got no problem being slothlike this week and don’t feel antsy to get out there like so many people do. Of course, it’s only Monday, so that might change.
Ah, let’s talk about what’s going on for everybody else!! This last weekend marked the beginning of the multi race reports rolling in on the Marathon Training Forum – marathon season is now in full swing. A couple ladies I’ve been virtually training with these past months in the Women’s BQ thread raced St. George on Saturday. The weather was horrible with rain and headwinds the whole time.
Their reports brought tears to my eyes because these gals pushed to the very end, they were not about to back off, even though it became harder and harder as it went, one even ending up in the med tent after crossing the finish. Their BQs proved elusive, but only for the environmental conditions. Both came within minutes of their goal and there is no question that, had it been a normal weather day, both would have succeeded. HikerGirl and Wendy, you have my complete, unabashed respect for the effort you put into your races. I only hope I complete mine with as much strength and mental fortitude that you gals put forth.
Beyond my gals, there are a handful of other reports to read and rejoice or commiserate with from all sorts of runners, zoomy to mid-pack and beyond. But the one constant is that there’s no telling what’ll happen on raceday. No matter what kind of speed you own, you can do what you can to prepare yourself, but ultimately, there are good or bad days, it’s simply not up to us. I find this hugely comforting (when it doesn’t terrify me…control freak that I am), since it’s a universal truth and somehow that takes the onus off.
Happy running to you, friends, and have a great week. I’ll try to come up with something worth posting in the next couple days, but without a long run or an interval session, I’m a bit of a yawn. Perhaps there’ll be some morsels of major freaking out (that’s always good for a post) but I’m hoping for some peace of mind these next few days. Yeah, right.

Where are these race reports of which you speak? I need to read some high drama to inspire me.
I will indeed introduce myself if I spot you on Sunday. And, likewise, I’m sure, I hope.
Hey girl, here is the high drama you seek….
Wendy
HikerGirl
On Wendy’s, there was a jerk type person who refuted the headwinds, saying it was enjoyable weather for a race among other things (his longest run was 10 miles, averaged 23/week, plus he posted his complete race report in her report thread). He deleted his original posts, thus the comments that appear to be out of our asses…
If you want more report fun, just stick around the Marathon Training Forum and read anything with the word Report or RR in the subject. Good stuff!
I will totally introduce myself if I recognize you, your avatar is just so darn tiny, though!
GIM, I wanted to thank you for your kind words about my race. I did want to give you my (unsolicited) opinion about your goal marathon pace. I thought it was a good idea to back off after your half. However, I saw you got back on track without skipping a beat. You have trained with a 3:40 as your goal. You are mentally tough and very disciplined to do the things throughout the course of the race that you NEED to do to HELP in your success. (I believe a lot of people take the distance for granted and disregard that stuff until they pay for it). You got a big wake up call on your last race and won’t let that happen again. I learned how valuable it was to have a goal that meant something to you on Saturday. I believe in your abilities and training and heart and think you should stand by your 3:40 or 3:45 goal. Being gutsy and going for it is who you are and you are smart enough to figure out what you need to do out there if you find you’re in over your head. I thought hard about coming here to tell you this. I hope it doesn’t upset you and screw you up in your ‘taper’ week. The nerves and tension tend to be high. Whatever you chose, I know you will do great. You are smart and methodical and that’s alot of the marathon – not letting its subtleness creep up on you. You’ve been there done that. Good Luck Flo, I know you will be great!

Better not pee on the Clintons either!
You know how it goes in those potty lines. More and more looking at watches, then thoughtful looks at nearby bushes by the women, while the guys saunter away round the corner….
Jackie…upset me?!?
Hey girl, you totally gave me the green light. If you’d have said, “don’t have a goal, it’s your first” I’d have sicked all those people who’ve already said “go for it” on you! lol
You were my “first marathon” tester from our group. I wish to god you had better weather, but man, did you rise above it, guts galore! It was a success in my book and a huge inspiration. Thank you so much for stopping by and giving me the positive message. This silly race stuff is SO much bigger than a bit of recreation on a weekend morning, it becomes everything. Everything. At least until the next one.
Btw, I apologized to my forum friend mentioned in the previous post, it’s silly to have let my insecurities be affected by someone’s opinion (especially one who meant well), so I feel a little ashamed of my reaction.
Jim, lol! I’ll try to leave the Clintons out of my pee path.
Sorry — but I think I got a BETTER email today:
“This is to notify you that your entry into the 112th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21, 2008 has been accepted, provided that the information you submitted is accurate.”
Actually, now that I copy that I realize I’ve been accepted into this year’s race (which happened 6 months ago. Hopefully I’ll be accepted into NEXT year’s race as well!
Now THAT’S an email!! Congratulations Betsy, how utterly fun, exciting and giggle-inducing. Betsy In Boston…YAY!! Hmmm, it is kind of funny that they didn’t update the race info, maybe they have a time machine we don’t know about.
It was a glitch — others on the RWOL Boston forum all got the same email. But fortunately I searched for my name in the 2009 entrants database and it was there!
You know, I just have this mental image of you shoving Bill Clinton out of the way as you bulldoze past him. Enjoy your taper! I don’t know why everyone else is so damn restless – I’m counting down the weeks until I can sit on my ass.
Those stories and the camaraderie in training is part of why I love marathon season!
Thanks girl, here’s to your future taper/excellent ass-sitting, you’ve just got a few weeks left yourself! Woohoo Philadelphia!! Ditto on the stories, it’s such an exciting time for so many runners and we get to eavesdrop on everyone’s adventures. Love it.
Peeing on a school…that’s quite a visual! :P
Yeah, I can just see you jumping over a limo yelling “get the hell out of my way, Bill!”
my little sister (a jockey/equestrian) is really good at peeing into a soda can when she is in a car. otherwise her fave place to pee is into the hay in the horse trailers. maybe nick can lay some hay for you along the course…
Kazz, I know, can’t help but visualize it…
Monkey Tango, little sis gets huge points for making it into a soda can, I’m hugely impressed!! That’s a small target! A favorite gal poster on the Marathon forums peed into a plastic bag while on the bus to the Boston start, which would be easier aim wise, though harder audience wise.
I just asked Nick to lay some hay tomorrow while I run as practice before the big day…he said he’ll be washing his hair around that time. Useless men.
I guess we’ve all seen that youtube video of Paula Radcliffe’s lightning alfresco pit stop on her way to winning the London Marathon. I don’t think any guy could have done it that fast.
Talk about frustrating. I couldnt come up with a comment to this post. Total writers block. But I do remember the time I was on a date and went with a group to a college football game, this is back when they played in leather helmets, her friend ended up peeing on the college parking deck. Yes there was beer involved. But I didnt see what position she used to pee.
Jim, so glad you mentioned it, I’d never seen it, so here’s the link for those that haven’t either.
Bruce, too funny, you always have something worthwhile to add, but this one was useless without knowing her position.
Dogpound (aka Doggie Poo) has a good crap story from a race last weekend. Be warned.
Flo,
I have been inconspicuosly absent of late, but I did want to say good luck to you this Sunday! I will, of course, be waiting like a lemming for your fantastic race report, go get ‘em.
Aw, thanks Tobey. That means a lot to me that you checked in for the good wishes. Hope you’re doing well yourself!!
Tobey – Like a lemming? So you’ll head for the nearest cliff if Flo has a less-than-perfect race? Tobey’s life is in your hands Flo. but no pressure or anything!
Add my Good Luck wishes to your big pile, too.
I’m off to see the podiatrist later today. He muttered something about a stress fracture when I recounted the symptoms over the phone, so cross your fingers…
JIM!! No, no no. There’s no way to tell such a thing over the phone, so hopefully you’ll find out different when you see him. Didn’t even know you were hurting like this. Take care of yourself and report back as soon as you’re at a computer again.
