Funny how I’m writing more about a race I didn’t even run, but there were 2 notable things I had forgotten.

1. While I was at mile 12ish, a kid (maybe 18?) hopped on the sidewalk and asked if I had a cell phone.  While he’s dialing, he tells me “This was too much, I’m stopping at the Half.”  Not sad, just matter of fact at finding himself out of his league, then I hear him on the phone, “Hey dad, I’m ok, everything’s fine, but I’m stopping early, can you pick me up?”.   When he hands the phone back he smiles and says before running off, “Now you have a running story.”  So cute!  But kid, do I got running stories…

2. There was a young woman who joined our cheering threesome for a while.  She was really nice, involved in our conversation and it was fun to have another person yelling out encouraging stuff – so it was a big surprise when, after about 25 minutes, she sees a marathoner she apparently had been waiting for.  As he runs by, she gets in step with him and is gone in a flash.  It was kinda cool, like “oh, there are runners all over the place.”

But enough race blab, let’s get to the current meat:

Today was an afternoon 8 w/3 tempo, avg tempo pace 7:42.  I went back and forth today on whether I’d bother with the tempo portion.  My 5K is Saturday and I don’t really need to do one (it’s not like it’s going to make a difference) but then I still have race #2 in December soooo…I went for the tempo after all.

As for the rest of the week, I’m doing a little less mileage (around 40) but no speed session.  Tomorrow’s an easy 7 and I hope it keeps raining so I can try my new Hydrolite jacket.  Funny how you want crappy weather when you get new apparel to fight it, and this jacket’s especially in need of a road test because it’s so weird.  I ran some water over the sleeve and the fabric bubbled up like it had scabies or something.  It was gross/cool.  But I digress…

Wednesday is 8 w/strides (5x200m), easy 7 on Thursday, off on Fri and then, race!

Now there’s something about 5Ks I’m not remembering…the distance? noooo…it’s on the tip of my…oh yeah! They make me want to die.

This should be interesting.

Interesting about the kid. I wonder if he will try again with better prep?

“I hope it keeps raining so I can try my new Hydrolite jacket.” Hahaha! Be careful what you wish for.
On second thoughts, wearing a jacket that manifests a skin condition might be unsettling for your opponents.

I’m with you on 5Ks. Uuuurgh! I once got puked on when handing out 5K finish ribbons. That may have influenced my opinion ;)

  • Flo:

About the kid, it was actually refreshing seeing someone without anything deeply invested in the marathon. No life or death. I can’t relate myself, of course.

Can’t believe you got puked on while doling ribbons, that’s hilarious! Or like my jacket, hilarious/disgusting.

  • Maybe Sugoi should market their Hydrolites to race volunteers AND runners. Imagine the satisfaction of seeing that puke roll right off you like, um, scabies.

I’m glad I’ve already eaten breakfast.

  • I agree with you and Jim – 5k’s can be excruciating. The stupid, moronic side of me thought about scouting out some kind of Thanksgiving day 5k around me, thinking I would run soft at Philly then try to PR in a 5k. Um, no thanks, that’s not going to happen. 5ks still have all the pain & misery of a larger race scrunched into 3 miles – yuck.

Excited to read about yours on Saturday though :) Good luck!

  • Christi:

LMAO at the 5k comments!!!! My non-running husband was just telling me the other day that I don’t run hard enough. In his altered mind if you don’t have the urge to throw up at least once a month during one of your runs then you are not getting better and you are not running fast enough. Maybe I will dedicate my Turkey Trot 5k to him and really blow up the time. Yes, pun intended!!! Happy races everyone!!!!

  • Flo:

You guys are all cracking me up. This deserves my creepy laughing emoticon. :))

  • Mir:

Big LOL on the jacket. I can definitely relate! And you’re right, 5Ks are hard! If you really race a 5K, you feel every bit as dead at the end as at a marathon or a half marathon. Of course, recovery is much faster!

  • Flo:

Mir, good luck on yours! You’re going to kick some turkey ass, I just know it!

  • Kai:

Aww, poor kid. I saw a group younger teenagers running it, who looked like they were struggling fairly early on. I hope they’re all ok! Too bad he didn’t have time to hear YOUR running story!

I thought it was hilarious about you “harassing” another petite Asian girl! Next time, we will have to run a marathon together and I will bring out the bacon people. =D

  • Bruce:

Good thing your brain dont get mad at you for saying its jogging and not running.

You do know your going to rock that 5K?

  • Lisa:

Hi Flo-I thought about you a lot when I was in Philly! I love your city and had a great marathon-no great time or anything just a wonderful experience (I clocked in at 4:35). I really did look for you on the course, but I was a little worried about slipping on ice at water stations and such…all in all it was a beautiful weekend in a beautiful city and you are really lucky to live there! Have a truly blessed Thanksgiving-I know that we are all thankful for your inspiring words each week! Peace-Lisa

  • Flo:

Aw, thanks Lisa, you’re a darling and I’m glad you had such a wonderful race!! Stop with the “no great time”, it sounds great to me! You were on my list but without knowing what most of my list looked like, it was kind of useless. :D One of these days we’ll meet though!
