1 second.
No joke, 1 stinkin’ second for a new PR of 23:29. But before you think I’m all down about it (well sure, I’m a little unhappy) the course wasn’t as flat as my previous 5K, so it’s not a complete “what the fuck?!” – just a partial one.

I was 5th in my age group, 45-49, as was Lara in hers, 35-39, with a new GGPR (see comments) of 23:58…and she’s mainly a bicycle chick, so she rocked!

Meanwhile, I tried to do the belly breathing thing the whole way, but it’s something I need to work on. I still heard myself breathing noisily throughout, but less gaspiness, more exhaliness, so it was a less irritating improvement.
Speaking of improvements, my next 5K is 5 weeks away and I am bound and determined to work hard on speed in the meantime. Five weeks isn’t a huge block of time, but a concerted effort with intervals simply has to bring a meatier PR come April 19th. Famous last words.
Btw, I wore my HR monitor during this race, which I haven’t worn since my first race last April. I hit a max HR of 190, same as the high I’d recorded before, again reinforcing the fact that those silly calculations of 220-age are totally bogus. But then, you knew that, right?
Lastly, I would be so over-the-moon stinkin’ happy if once, just once, I’d remember to stop my Garmin after a race. It hasn’t happened yet, so I highly doubt it’s even possible, but I’ll be dreaming of that great day as something to achieve in the future.
And with that, I’m signing off to play with my new Time Master time calculator that just came in the mail. How I love a new toy!

Hey, 1 stinkin’ second matters…my time was 23:58 silly NOT 23:59! ; ) And I think you should be happy…1 second is better than no new PR plus this one was definitely not totally flat! As for new PR’s – I think I may have run a 5K faster than that but that was waaaaaay back in my 20′s when I ran more and I’d have to search through a bunch of old crap to see if I’m really telling the truth so I’ll go with it. Alright, guess I will attempt to add some speedwork in the next 5 weeks also to try and bring that number down.
Fun time as always ms flo! Nice shot of you in front of the tree racer girl, you look great!
Lol, I fixed your time about 5 edits ago (I’m always messing with these posts long after I post ‘em). Ok, I’m happy, I’m happy…there, are you happy?
Sorry for the confusion of calling it your PR, maybe not a lifetime one, but we’ll call it your Grownup Girl PR, or GGPR. Compared to last year, it’s a sizeable one and that, my dear, is fabu! Love you, girl!!
No negative Nancy stuff! I A PR is a PR and it was a hillier course like you said, so you KNOW your time would have been even faster on a flatter course!
Great job both of you and very nice pics! Looking forward to our next race together which I guess is the 1 mile trial which im increasingly more and more nervous about. I don’t know why I just am!
With 5 weeks to get ready for your next 5k you will definitely have a smokin new PR on the next one! I bet close to 23 flat!
Care to share your mile splits ?? I love that stuff as you know!
I don’t believe you, sounds too forced and annoyed ; ) But I’m happy you convinced me to come!
No confusion, as far as I’m concerned it is my new PR since the only other 5K time I know for sure right now is the one from last year.
Hi Mattsky! I know (re: one mile trial), I’m scared about it, too, but on the other hand, it’s so foreign, I can’t even take it seriously. I’ve yet to try to run one mile as fast as I can…too much work!
Splits were 7:31, 7:38, 7:36 and something like 7:26 for the last bit (have to piece that last .1 from SportTracks thanks to my inability to stop the stupid watch).
Lara, since when am I ever annoyed? (Nick better not see this or he’ll have a field day)
What a pleasant surprise! I even gasped, with sound, at my joyous surprise at seeing a new pic. You never post photos, unless prompted, so it was great to see that Lara going with you benefited us all! Thanks, Lara.
Great job on the times, ladies! And enjoy your new toy, Flo!
Lol Amy, if you only knew how many shots we took in an effort to find a couple I could live with. We even talked about finding this website Lara knew of that tells you how to take good photos of yourself and we also giggled that we should learn to make “photo faces” in the mirror so that one day we could possibly become photogenic. In other words, these were hard won.
Thanks, girl.
Yeah I ALWAYS forget to stop my Garmin too so you’re not alone there. Very frustrating
The splits look good to me. Your still not quite back to pre-sick im thinking but with your miles getting back to where they were its only a matter of time before your times really start falling! Can’t wait to see what you do at Broad Street! That race is a serious confidence booster believe me!
Congrats on the PR!! A PR is a PR. After you get to a certain point you have to take seconds off not minutes. Actually im jealous, I haven’t broke 24 in a 5K . Dont see it happening any time soon. Since I dont got a 5K planned till……… I dont got one scheduled. but will do some this summer/spring for sure. Marathon took priority for now. Anyways great job!
Thanks Bruce. Btw, you should definitely do a 5K after your marathon. Given a proper rest period, you’ll likely PR bigtime. Take advantage of all that training!
Matt, being sick put me back a few weeks, but I could have worked smarter, as well – doing intervals as of mid-Jan, instead of substituting easy hills. I was thinking Steamtown prematurely when I should have been readying better for shorter races.
Guess I didn’t help things either by doing a 5-mile tempo on Monday and speedwork Tuesday. Could of made it a 3-mile tempo or skipped it entirely, but should of had a rest day between. Oh well, live and learn, I’m enjoying the journey.
Nice job girls! I knew you could do it. BTW I agree about the 220 calc bit. I ran a hard 7 mile tempo the other night and wore my HRM for the first time in a long time. I held steady at 173-178 for most of that time, and according to the calc, my max is 168! Enjoy the PR’s, they probably won’t last for long!
“Enjoy the PR’s, they probably won’t last for long!”
I’ve only been running a year now, aren’t I owed a wee bit more time before my goose is cooked? Otherwise I’ll have nothing to write about.
Oh you and that voice of doom.
I meant because you will be gettin new ones!
Oops! There I go jumping to conclusions, mucho sorry about that, Tobey my friend. You and the voice of Zoom! That’s what I meant to say. (lame save, huh?)
Apology accepted my speedy little friend:)
Wow! I don’t visit for a while, and you have a new PR and photos too! Congrats on the PR! Not only are you both speedy, but you are beautiful, gorgeous, awesome women! Very inspiring!
