Movie. Finally saw one that’s been on my list for a few years…Wordplay.  It’s about crossword puzzlers – those who do them and those who make them.  It features Will Shortz of NYT crossword fame and follows a handful of nerdy/lovable hopefuls going for the grand prize at the 2005 Crossword Championship.  Loved it.

Bibs. Before my last race, I opened a conversation on the Women’s BQ thread concerning bib placement.  I’d been thinking about race photos and how I often have a case of radar nips.  While this might be a pleasant sight for a large part of the population, it squicks me out.  I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve photoshopped two or four.

I got to thinking, “what if I just pin my bib higher, so it covers up the area in question?”  Eureka!  But wait, would it look stupid?  So I do an image search on Google for Elite females and see that a majority of them pin their bibs higher, even when not necessitated by a short top.  So that’s what I did at Lehigh and it worked a charm.  No more radar nips – it’s all part of a big underworld lady secret.

Farts. Ever since I posted that Kashi Go Fart post back in December, Google’s been sending me visitors daily searching for “kashi farts” “cereal farting” and other keywords of that nature.   This afternoon, someone linked to it from a foodie site, Chowhound.com because he thought it funny (having found it on his own “kashi fart” quest) so I’ve had tons of folks coming to read it all day.  There’s something satisfying about being recognized for your farts.

  • Pulling foodies over to a running blog? Cool. I wonder if any of them read more and resolve to give running a try…

  • Barb:

OMG! I’m a certified nerd – I do the NYT Sunday Crossword in pen (though I think it’s easier than their Friday and Saturday puzzles). I also liked “Wordplay”.

I want an underworld lady secret! I don’t care about my radar nips.

    LOL on Kashi Go Fart!

  • mmmm…. farts.

    wait… what?

I saw a similar movie… I forget the name of it, but it was about Scrabble players. Some of them are sick… so serious about the game they basically dedicate 22 hours a day to it. Would be 24 but you gotta sleep sometime.

  • Flo:

runwithhim, the Scrabble movie is next! Can’t wait.

Barb, just another reason to idolize you, Sunday in pen, wow.

Jim, of all the gawkers, I think only one has ventured into other pages, so alas, not much crossing over going on.

  • On bib placement: I’d like to eventually try the Magdalena Lewy-Boulet “bib below the waist” approach, but not until I’ve got the lower body shapeliness required to carry it off. For some reason, I think it looks completely badass when done with a pair of boyshorts.

As for searches, one of my most highly trafficked pages is a stupid post I put up last summer with a picture of a baby chipmunks. I get so annoyed by all the hits I get on searches for “baby chipmunks” that I’m tempted to take the post down. But how can I kill a baby chipmunk?

Think of yourself as providing a valuable resource to the community with that post — both the consumers of breakfast cereal and anyone within a 20 foot radius of them.

  • Flo:

Julie, just looked her up, you’re right…way cool. Lol on the chipmunks. I have a photo on this blog from last summer’s vacation where I’m comically/lasciviously grabbing a wooden Indian’s balls. People find it searching for American Indian photos…oh, the guilt when I see that.

  • Christi:

Oh Flo, you always crack me up. I always have radar nips but never thought of moving my bib. I usually wear my on my shorts or pants so I can shed layers. Thanks for the tip!!!! FYI, I thought your Kashi go fart blog was one of the best!

  • Mir:

I forgot to respond to that discussion, but I’ve always pinned my bib high because I seem to have better luck with it being visible to race photographers that way. I don’t usually have trouble with radar nips because I wear two sports bras (the only advantage so far that I’ve found).

Wordplay was awesome, but made me feel like an idjit! :D

  • Magdalena seems to fold her bib’s lower corners into her bikini bottom (or whatever you call those things). Looks kinda scratchy. I tend to associate the bare midriff look with elites, so i was somewhat surprised to pass a gal dressed that way in a recent race. If we guys want to look fast, we have to wear brightly colored flats or something.

  • I have seen the movie, yes it awesome! I have you seen the one about the scrabble players? I think it is called Word Wars….

  • Kazz:

SHHH…you’re spilling all of our secrets to success! ;) :P

And-HA. You’re famous in the Kashi Fart subculture. :P It’s funny how people wind up on blogs…some architecture/mansion appreciation group hit mine like gangbusters because of photos of the homes I had on my marathon race report. And I always get Widespread Panic fans because of an entry titled after one of their songs.

That movie sounds really cool….I love the documentary “Spellbound” about the spelling bee kids so maybe I’ll have to see Wordplay when I get a chance.
