Alas, no PR today (22:31), but it was a good race and my hopes of having fun were fulfilled.  Nick was such a huge sweetie/supporter, insisting on driving me there, then happily sitting in the car and reading Rolling Stone for most of it, until the end when he got some finishing shots.

All last night and this morning, I kept going back and forth over what to wear because it was going to be cold (final temp: 29, wind chill 22), so I wore two jackets in the car and even brought a third (indecisive much?) leaving a myriad of outerwear options at my disposal.

Despite carrying this closet with me, I decided after my warmup to wear no jacket at all, just my half-zip top, tights, gloves and a hat.  I was strangely warm at the start while all around me people were bouncing for heat and aside from one big wind gust mid-race, I was comfy throughout.

This race was in the same town as the Turkey Trot and as soon as we parked, I saw my nemesis from that race (and several local races) doing her warmup.  After the gun went off, I kept my eye on her jacket for as long as I could, and though I lost her eventually, the fact that I had her in sight as long as I did told me I was doing ok.

I had my Garmin auto-lap on because when I emailed to ask if there were any clocks on the course, the person who replied told me no, just start and finish.  Turns out there were clocks at miles 1 and 2, as well.  The weird thing about that area of Jersey, though, is that my Garmin consistently measures shorter there, rather than longer, as in Philly.  But this was a certified course, so I had no problem ignoring Garmin and relying on the clocks for pacing info instead.

The course was not as flat as the Trot, but not hugely hilly either, just rolling.  While in the midst of it, there was a funny guy who tried to chat some, but in a 5K all I can get out is “I. can’t. talk”, so that’s all he got from me until afterwards when we exchanged a few words.  Also, in the last mile, a woman in a white jacket (tiny thing) slips past me, zooming ahead and I had a feeling she was in my age-group, so that wasn’t very happy-making.

The course ends after an uphill, yet I managed a strong kick, passed a couple people before the finish and arrived just 1 second behind white jacket woman.  She ended up winning third, so no AG award for me.

But the high point of the race was meeting the Turkey Trot nemesis.  I should mention that she is actually not my nemesis and won’t be for a while because she’s a 20:xx runner, but I like calling her my nemesis, anyway. :p

She has a couple girls that usually race with her (and place all the time, too) but today she was alone, so while we were waiting around I introduced myself and told her she’s my nemesis.  She couldn’t have been cooler.  We ended up chatting for about 40 minutes and when she got her first place award, I was really happy for her and not wanting to trip her, unlike that sneaky white jacket woman (I keed, I keed).

So, I left with a solid race behind me and a new friend.  Also, I have concluded that losing a little weight is definitely in order.  The one thing all the faster women have in common (besides being faster than me) is they are thinner than I am, and I can afford to lose a few pounds.  To emphasize my point, I leave you with a parting shot to compare white-jacket’s chicken thigh with my own, far meatier sample.  Don’t worry, no aspirations to be as tiny as her, but it is interesting to note that two of her legs equal one of mine.

ah joisey, my old running grounds…

Hi Flo, Great Race! I know it wasn’t a PR but man, that is fast. You will catch white jacket girl one of these days (soon) – no doubt. You are focused like that. Glad you got to meet her but what will your motivation be now? Your evil competitive thoughts will be met with that friendly conversation where you found she was ‘cool’. Hahha. You look thin and great in those photos. Thanks to Nick for getting those. BTW, I hope you never get those chicken thighs, that’s never a good look. Have a great day woman! I still can’t believe you ran in only the half zip. It was in high 40′s here and I had two shirts on. I know, I’m such a cold wimp. Jackie

  • Great job in the frigid temps!
    Keep up the good work!

  • Barb:

Flo! I agree – White Jacket woman looks too skinny. Thanks to Nick also for the great pics. I can’t believe someone wanted to chat with you in a 5K – insane. You ran a great race for such cold conditions – congrats!

  • Flo:

Thanks, sweet people. Doggie, Jackie, Flyers, Barb…big fat smooch for each one of you! :xo

  • Kai:

Perspective, my dear. Objects further away seem smaller than those closer up. ;) Anyway, as I recall, you had some abs of steel, so I can’t imagine you have THAT much extra weight. Congrats on your race!

  • Flo:

You’d think, but she really was that small. OK, maybe not 1/2 my leg but 3/4s for sure. Thank you for the ab comment, my weight is all behind me so my front view is usually fine and fab. Now to get my behind to match my front. ;) Aside from the potential boob loss, it’ll be a good thing.

  • Jim E:

Great pics, Flo, particularly that first one. It’s fun to have a nemesis, even if you’re the best of pals when not racing. Good Race!
Perhaps white jacket woman can reach nemesis status, particulalrly as she’s about the same speed as you.

  • mirnr:

Suweet pics – Neither of your feet is touching the ground!!! I love your race reports. So, I’d be interested to see what you come up with for time differences for cold weather vs. optimal weather. You look so buff. Did you see the guy in the red shirt/black pants checking out your assets in the 2nd pic???? Huh Huh????

  • Flo:

Well Mirnr, funny you should mention that… (the weather diff, not the butt-checker :D )
I was just looking at this article. If you scroll to the bottom, it says that the temps would have added about 2%. Not that I believe it, though it’s nice to think there could be some performance hit because of it. My nemesis/friend said she didn’t run as well due to the cold, so it’s possible.

Thanks Jim! I plan on leaving white jacket in the dust next time. I’ll be her nemesis. ;)

  • Kazz:

Great photos….you look like you’re chasing down a purse snatcher in the first one! Love both feet off the ground there.

Love local races, being familiar with all the usual suspects, and using that to know how you’re pacing. Nice racing!

  • Bruce:

Great job! You looking good in the pictures too!!

  • Flo:

    Kazz, “purse snatcher”…lol, love it!

    Thanks Brucie!

  • mirnr:

Great article GIM – THat means I can hit my 52:xx. !!!! I should stop running right now. LOL

  • Congratulations on a solid race Flo – you look fast to me :)

  • You look great in those photos — Flying Flo. With a little more training you will regularly be winning those AG awards. Trust me on this.

Also, see my recent post on fat and speed. Trim doesn’t always equal fast. I lined up for a half marathon awhile back behind a woman with about 10% body fat. She looked like a plucked chicken. Actually, she looked like a roasted plucked chicken, as she was overly tanned.

Since she was lining up in the front row, I figured she’d be running at least a 7:00 pace. The horn blew and she was off — running a 9:00 mile!

I no longer make assumptions about people based on their body types. I’ve seen people who look very fit who are piss poor runners, and vice versa.

  • Flo:

Mirnr, here’s another one for you from Tinman. This shows the performance hit even as even more dramatic than the RW article. No idea where he got his info from, though.

    Progman, thanks doll.

Julie, laughing at your tanned, plucked chicken. You’re right, skinny doesn’t necessarily equate with fast, though I think more often than not fast equates with thin. I liked your entry on it, btw. You’re obviously a fastie, so it’s cool to see you succeeding without matching the other ladies. For me though, sometimes the reasons I eat (because I deserve it and because I can) assure me I have room for improvement. That, and the remaining cottage cheese on my ass. :)

  • judy716:

Flo, awesome race! Love your RR and you are super-fast! I’m sure you’ll catch #1-3 in your AG soon. You look great in your pix, and your finishing kick looks fierce.

  • Heidi B.:

Personally, I’d take your thighs (runner’s thighs) over chicken thighs anyday! With your hard work and dedication, I’m sure you will do nothing but continue to improve. I could lose at least 15 pounds and probably decrease my times, but I love to eat. I’d be a f’ing bitch to those around me to. Oh………I couldn’t possibly put them through that. I’ll continue to try to eat in moderation what I want and work on improving running through drill etc. Great race and great thighs!

  • Christi:

Great job Flo!!!!!! You look great BTW!

  • Flo:

    Thanks Judy, Heidi and Christi!

  • Nice work. Would have been even better if you caught that guy in the red. You see how he is staring you down like “who was that woman on my tail” in the second pic?? Funny you say that about your nemesis. I had one for 3 years. There was a 5k I did every year and lost to him 2x, but the 3rd time (last year when i started “running”) I got him for 3rd in AG and got a plaque! You’ll catch white jacket girl eventually…

  • Flo:

Heya Weekend, congrats on finally trouncing your guy. White jacket will soon be history, it’s my new friend I gotta work on. ;)

On another note, a lot of people are coming into this post by searching on Google for the race results. White Jacket, if you read this, don’t hate me, you know it’s all in teasing fun. Congrats on the win.

  • Matt:

    Great report and race Flo!

The pics look great ( Kudos to Nick!) but the first is my favorite! U look so fast and guess what.. you are :)

You also look great just the way you are and im NOT just saying that because we are best buds! Crazy to deprive yourself of foods you enjoy just to lose a little weight to run faster in race. You don’t need to, trust me!

Looks like you have a new Nemesis to SMOKE like a HAVANA … REAL SOON… White Jacket girl is TOAST !!!!!

  • Flo:

Thanks Mattsky, looking forward to Pickling with you soon! ;)
