Back to pre-injury volume this week with 90 miles.  It also marks my first week incorporating doubles as a regular thing, which I loved, so 10-11 runs/week will be the norm until summer.

Even though the mileage is the same, twice-a-days are decidedly different from singles.  Despite the luxury of shorter runs, your day is actually more about running since you have a standing afternoon appointment with the pavement.  This might be a novelty factor that wears off eventually but it does feel like a larger commitment to the sport.  It’s as if me and Running had been dating but now we’re engaged.

It’s great though, I’m getting to bed at a more reasonable hour, the scale is dropping and I feel more adaptable.  For example, I’ve always run when the weather sucks the least, so in winter that meant afternoons exclusively.  But a pre-breakfast run on a frosty morning turns out to be a fine way to start the day, especially when countered by a warmer afternoon run.  You get to see the park changing outfits and personalities as the day progresses.

Anyway, the extra effort of getting dressed and out there twice doesn’t bug me as I thought it would.  My two other preconceived complaints also ended up being moot – mostly because it turns out I’ve no compunction about being a dirty pig.

That is to say, I always thought running twice/day meant you had to take 2 showers and do twice the laundry.  But unless I have somewhere I need to be between runs, I just dry off and sit in my filth (which isn’t real filth, maybe a tad salty but I don’t smell).  And since most of my runs are half the distance they used to be, I’m cool with wearing most of my stuff twice before washing.  Rule: As long as it doesn’t stink, it can have another run.

So here begins a new running experiment (doubles) and a continuation of the one I began last summer (mileage).  Needless to say, I’m excited to see what comes of it.  I expect good things ahead.

A Doubly Good Week In Review
All easy stuff, though a couple runs had some fartlek or a few faster miles.  It’s a relief to find my paces returning to normal, I figure a couple more weeks should do it.

More shoes and a PureFlow coda
Running Warehouse has a great sale on racing flats (20% off) that ends today so check out the offerings. The prices are so good I ordered a couple models I’ve been curious about: the Asics Hyper Speeds and the Saucony Fastwitch 5s.  I plan on using them both as regular training shoes since the Adios’ worked so well in that regard.

Speaking of, I really do still love my Adidas Adios’ so despite my dissing the awful new color scheme and major design revamp I’ll probably order a pair of the new version, but only after the price goes down.

A final word on the PureFlows: I mentioned how they’d been said to be slippery in wet/snowy conditions so I took them out on a rainy run this week.  I had great traction on the asphalt bike path so I thought people might have been overreacting…until I ran under a couple bridges and felt some serious slippage.  I’m not sure why, it was the same bike path asphalt on a warm day (so nothing was frozen and I avoided the tar repair spots) but it happened twice.  So I’ll wear them in the rain, being careful under bridges, but if it snows, forgetaboutit, I’ll use another shoe.

Damn nice week, Flo. And I agree about running doubles being fundamentally different; it does tend to structure your day, but it also makes recovery much easier (at least for an old guy like me).

  • Ewen:

Good week Flo! Love your ‘no stink’ washing rules and Pommy-style attitude to showering. I’m sure you smell fine, in spite of doubles.

Will be interested to see how you find this style of training after a couple of months. I’ve dabbled with doubles (but not long term, and with much lower total mileage). I found they had positive effects for HR/pace (aerobic fitness) and it was easier to run X mileage than the same in singles. I have a theory that they’re good for tricking the body into recovering faster… after a while the body knows it has another run coming up in half a day’s time so it works overtime to recover.

  • Ahhh, must feel so good to hit the high miles again. Also, I am impressed with all your doubles — especially in these darker winter months (I have a much easier time doubling in the summer when there’s more daylight). The prospect of getting dressed again/showering afterward is definitely what deters me.

  • Cris:

Hah! I love the dating/engaged mentality. So when are you and running going to settle down and make babies?

I did doubles for a long time, but I have to admit, I actually prefer a longer single run — that way I don’t have to do first mile suck twice a day.

  • Doubling does have its logistical challenges, but I love it just the same! Actually, I just got in from run 2 of 2!

And that traction thing is the one drawback to the Flows, but I’m with you, a different shoe when it rains = problem solved! I imaging they’ll take care of it with their updated version later on!

Keep racking up those distances! Holy cow!!

  • joegarland:

The hyperspeed is my racing flat. I quite like it. And thanks for the further Pure Flo point. (Yeah, I did that on purpose.)

  • Have you seen the new colors for the Flows? Too cute! Anyway, ROCKING week; way to go! I think I’m one of the only high mileage runners that actually HATES doubles. I just really, really hate them. I would rather run 15+ miles each day than do a double. (I don’t do that, though, b/c it’s stupid, but…) I just sit around and dread the 2nd run. It’s really bad. I’m always fine once I’m actually out there, but until then- bleh! Keep on trucking, girl! :)

Ps. Have you picked out some races yet? (I already know about Carlsbad.)

    • Flo:

But see, our lives are soooo different. By the time you’ve got your 2nd run, you’ve had to teach a classroom of kids and been on your feet all day. I basically lounge around my apartment till that second run – I’m extraordinarily spoiled in my self-employment. The other thing is it’s winter so my afternoon run is the nicest one, I’m not sure I’ll be doubling in Summer, it makes my stomach turn thinking about running on a sweltering summer afternoon.

I just put my race schedule together yesterday, matter of fact! It’s the subject for the next post. Here it is on the At The Races page. There are a couple extra possibilities but this is the plan for now.

  • Mike:

    Hey Flo,
I have some Fastwitch 5′s which I am using for shorter runs (I usually run in a more conventional shoe – Saucony Tangent 4/Phoenix 4) but love the low heel/forefoot feel and light weight of the FT5′s.

I will be interested to hear how you like them compared to Kinvaras (I haven’t tried Kinvaras yet)

    Cheers

Almost forgot, are you still loving the Maté?

Mike (From UK, currently back in Spain)

    • Flo:

I’m going to do a write-up on them soon. They gave me a blister in the arch (which is really weird) so I’m waiting till my foot is clear to try them again…a little nervous, but it might have been a one-time thing. Ah, the Maté, I admit to laxing off on that, though I still have it in the cupboard. :)

      • Mike:

        Cool,
I run in my Fastwitch 5s without socks and find them super-comfortable (the only shoes I have ever run sockless in) and have not had any problems. Also, the FTs seem to come up a little smaller than all the other Saucony shoes I have used.
I use Injinji toe socks with all the rest – highly recommended!.

        Cheers

        Mike
