…were the first words my ex-husband said to me over the phone, after reading Sunday’s race report.  I laughed so hard, because he’s the sweetest, well-spoken Englishman and I don’t even think he called me that in the midst of our worst fights.  And I have to admit…I am.

Last week, because of the mini-taper for the race, it ended up only being a 38-mile week.  I was due for a cutback anyway, since the previous 4 weeks mileage were 57, 50, 49, 50, it came at a good time.  But since this week is technically my first week of taper, I didn’t want to lose whatever quality work was on the schedule, as well as keeping the scheduled mileage.

So yesterday I ran 8 easy, no pushing, averaged 9:07.  No complaints, felt good.  Today’s schedule (after some creative rearranging)  was 8 w/5×600 (the usual 5K pace, 90 sec rest intervals).

I won’t lie, I wondered how speedwork would feel after a major jolt to the body, especially because my fertile imagination still pondered sudden death, dropping among the army of fat, brown geese waddling along the path – though considering the unprecedented amount of goose shit today, I was more likely to slip and fall than collapse from a workout.

So forget my previous VO2max pacing, I figured today would be fine doing it for effort, but one thing was sure, I was doing ‘em, no question about that.  Started my first one, heard that tuneless beep on my Garmin that says the workout has fallen below my chosen pace.  No surprise, it could beep all it wanted, and it did, incessantly.  Final turtle pace tally: 7:25, 7:29, 7:29, 7:25, 7:34.  Eh, I really can’t complain after the weekend I had.  It did the job, got my legs moving and my heart beating, but that was all I had in me today.

Another observation from Sunday, as I look down as my lightly skinned knees and wonder how that happened (I really haven’t a clue).

Know that if something like major dehydration happens to you, you lose all reasoning, because I remember at one point, during that slow death march to avoid a DNF, I kept wondering if I was dehydrated or had hyponatremia (too much water!).  I knew it was one or the other, but was paralyzed in my thoughts as to what to do about it, so I did nothing.  Crazy stuff.

So tomorrow I have 5 recovery on tap and on Sunday, my last long run (really? already? sigh, can’t believe this is coming to a close) of 17 miles.  My main goal for the 17 is to take my time, my secondary goal is to not want to puke when I take my gels.

They’ll be in the flask, which will help, but some time after I puked from the sports drink on Sunday, I had an idea in the back of my mind that I should take another gel, but the thought was absolutely nauseating.  I’m hoping that was only temporary disgust, unlike when you get drunk in high school on pina coladas and can’t drink them for a decade…if so, this could be problematic.

Let me close by saying I cannot wait for the debates tonight.  I see McCreepy has finally agreed to attend now that he’s done saving the world.  I’m utterly excited to watch Obama be as erudite, logical, level-headed and brilliant as ever.  The Class Act vs. The Lizard…this should be fun.

WHAT IS UP WITH THE GOOSE SHIT!?!?!?!?
I ran into the same problem this morning. THe geese were everywhere and so was their crap.
At this point effort is good. I mean really, anything else isn’t really going to help but pushing too hard could hurt.

  • Flo:

Hah! I know, I think it’s the rain, they apparently get off on pooping on wet asphalt.

  • Jim E:

Your ex is English? Me too, although I hang around in California these days. We’re running amongst geese too. Two weeks ago I nearly collided with one that was taking off. Good job I saw it coming!
I should think the nausea was temporary. My stomach is pretty robust, but I’m sometimes nauseous after racing. At the finish of a 12K a few months ago, I downed two free yogurts. Big mistake.

  • Flo:

Well, hey there, ya Brit! I lived in Leeds for a year when I was a kid, talk about your culture shock. Do you get back much?

  • Jim E:

Every two years or so. It’s getting expensive!

  • Flo:

Yeah, and it’s only going to get worse. Move ‘em all here. :D

  • Bruce:

Didn’t someone say you would analyzing that DNF more?

  • Flo:

Yes, and that person was wrong – observation is not analysis ;) . Good luck this weekend, Bruce, we’re rooting for you!

  • Kai:

Ughhh, Flo, I am so scared for the elections because it’s such a toss-up right now. I don’t agree with anything McCain says and Palin just makes me extremely extremely pissed off as a woman.

Congrats on making it through the hardest parts of your training. Try not to go taper-crazy. ;D

  • Flo:

Kai, I think last night went well, though not with the “knockout punches” that everyone was dying for, the debate polls say it was a quiet victory. As for Palin, Thursday’s debate is going to be delicious, simply delectable in it’s “truth will out” factor…I cannot wait!!

Thanks on the training congrats, hope yours is going well (I’m sure it is, loved the pics from your Half, btw.) Also, happy belated birthday, child-thing!

My report is up on my blog. I plan to overanalyze it for days to come.

Hey Flo! So glad to read that you are back on track. I ran the Hamptons Marathon today in the freakin’ pouring rain-yuk-it was a tough course and with the wind and pounding rain the conditions were just awful. I was 30 minutes off my goal time of 4:15. The only thing i can say is that you are smart to do so many long runs. I think one of my mistakes was not doing enough of them. Oh, and when I turned my Garmin on at the start, it died…even after having been charged. So, make sure (triple sure) that you charge your Garmin in the wall overnight before Steamtown! Ciao-Lisa

  • Jim E:

Wow, everyone is racing all of a sudden. My turn next week, in the San Jose Half. But today I was just goofy.
Out group run, which is in a different place each week, was starting only 4 miles from home today, so I ran there, and back afterwards. So far so good, but there were two runs on offer: A nice little 6 mile loop, and a 13 mile monster led by an ultra runner. Guess which I did? Total mileage for the day: 21, for the week: 55. Better start tapering tomorrow!

On the debate, I thought one of the PBS guys put it quite well: “Foreign policy is in McCains wheelhouse… He needed a big win, and he didn’t get it”

  • Flo:

You guys!! For some reason I didn’t get email notifications for the last 3 comments or I would have replied sooner.

Bruce, congratulations on the PR!! I know it’s not the super-duper time you wanted, but considering the hills, it’s an even better PR than on paper. You’re getting faster without question! Huge congratulations to you! Enjoy your lazy Sunday. (oh, and I added your blog link to your post, don’t know why it was thinking it was spam, sorry ’bout that.)

Lisa, OMG, can’t imagine what it’s like doing a full in the rain (I’m sitting here, starting my long run late because it’s raining right now), the thought is a real stomach turner. Wow, sounds awful, I mean rain is one thing, winds are a whole ‘nuther matter. And your Garmin dying must have been another heart attack for you. One thing’s for sure, you are now a hard core marathoner, having suffered through such crappy weather. Did you end up with any blisters on your feet?

Hey, I just realized which Lisa you are! :D I saw your “wet marathon” thread on the Marathon Forum. Write a follow-up/report post in there, I’m sure it’ll be appreciated by anyone who read the thread (or anyone running a rainy marathon).

Jim, cool about the Half. Just about every major race the women in my Women’s BQ thread did this cycle was cursed, 3 of us had heat issues, there was a sprained ankle and I’m sure something else, so please…have a great race for us, won’t you? :) Congrats on the long run, too! Sounds cool to be running with an Ultra freak.

    Flo,

I am so disappointed. I enjoyed u’r blog so much. But, alas, as soon as someone interjects politics or religion into a non-political “public forum” I am turned off. I was reading a running blog. Now, I might as well be reading a blog by barb streisand or charles heston. Why do ppl feel the need to puke their religious/political leanings? Enjoyed the running stories, tho. And u don’t need me as a reader so I’m sure u’ll just say good riddance! Good luck with u’r marathon attempt!!

  • Flo:

It’s a shame those few sentences constitute “puking up” to you. If that’s all it takes, you get agitated pretty easily. Anyway, last time I checked, this wasn’t a “public forum”, it was (and still is) my personal blog. I get to say what I wanna say. You can have a blog and say what you wanna say. That’s what’s cool about blogs.

Thanks for the comparison to Babs and Charlton Heston (though with the latter’s freaky gun views, this blog pales in comparison), didn’t think of myself as a celeb blogger, but now I will. ;)

Take care and safe running to you.
