Today’s commotion was my downstairs neighbor yelling in the courtyard at a man on a ladder who was working on the building. She was screaming at him for “watching me while I was walking around undressed.”
A couple hours later, I notice someone opening my door with a key (my desk is a foot away from the door). I freak out and open the door after a harried “who’s there?”, turns out to be the owner of the building who wasn’t even aware this apartment was occupied (everything’s done through a rental agency). He was investigating the alleged problem with the guy on the ladder, don’t know what he needed to see in here, though.
As for running, let’s see what’s been going on since I wrote last. Sunday was supposed to be 17 but I had a really bad pain in my lateral shin from the previous day’s hill repeats (which started the day before that) and I got really scared, so I walked about 3/4 mile. One of those times when you’re all “this is new, it feels more serious, there’s no muscle there so it must be a sfx!” so I went online when I got home, read scary stuff for about 2 hours (because if you’re going to make yourself miserable, you might as well do it up right) and decided it was a fibular sfx.
Such thoughts I had, like how horrible to be this close to doing something of substance and now my running “career” is over and what the hell am I going to do???? I’ll get fat and lose my fitness and have to come back in 2010, slower and older and I brought this upon myself, oh what have I done? waaaaahhhh.
Turned out to be shin splints. First time I’d had it in that location, but taking yesterday off and a bunch of ibuprofen fixed me right up. I’m telling you, I was afraid to use The Stick, thinking I’d break my leg clean in two with shards of bone floating around. I’m really an idiot some times.
Today was a Hudson run, 3 easy, 3 from MP to 5K pace, 3 easy. I did it no prob, not even a hint of leg pain, lol.
I’ve got a big Half this weekend, the infamous PDR that landed me in the hospital last year, so I’m hydrating my ass off and will be carrying my small water bottle. I’m thrilled that the weather looks like it’ll be under 60 degrees for the start. Not feeling hugely confident about racing, though I’m not sure why. Part of it is just feeling complacent for not having raced in a while, it’s scary getting back into it and having to see where I’m at. Anyway, I’ll be shooting for sub 1:33.
What else? Oh yeah, shyster fucking car inspection assholes got me for the usual $535. I know they make it up because on the phone he lists the stuff and says I need a new battery, so I say uh-uh, that is a new battery, so he says OK and takes if off the list. If he can take that off the list, then why is anything on the list? Has to add up to $535 is why (I swear, when I take it there it’s always that amount of money..but it’s convenient to walk home from, sigh). I’m just dividing it by 12 and telling myself it’s $45/month to use the car. That hurts less.
In kooky news, I got an email today sent to my Voiceover website email asking if I was Flo Karp the musician? Turns out it was someone that used to play in my band and he had been listening to an old song of mine and then found me on the web. Was too cool to reconnect as he’s had a big full life since then and so have I.
Looking forward to tomorrow, my friend Simon comes down from NYC for a bunking party at my hovel, then a big Ikea shopping expedition. I can’t wait to unload on him, the poor man. :-) I’m expecting much laughter and a couple buckets worth of tears, too.
I haven’t talked much about Nick, but we’re doing great (as great as can be under the circumstances). We took each other out for two excellent birthday dinners the first week of September (two Virgos) and have spent some time together since with dinner/tv and a morning coffee, phone calls and emails, too. Life is strange not living with him but it has to be and I’m just grateful that we’re both from progressive backgrounds so remaining close friends is a given.
And that’s about everything on my mind at the moment. Tomorrow I’ll go out for 12, then I can relax about mileage for the rest of the week because even with the day off last week, I wracked up 70 miles (actually 69.90 miles…I am not a slave to the decimal, dammit!). So I figure tomorrow will be a slow and comfortable 12, then the rest of the week will probably go 10 w/strides, 9, 5w/strides, Race. Eek.

Freak, just walking in. I don’t care if he is the owner of the building.
You are way too much like myself. I would have had myself diagnosed after about 24 straight hours of obsessively searching the internet. So glad to hear that it was just shin splints.
Know what you mean about racing. Haven’t raced since the half, St. Judes Classic in December. I have a half on the 27th of this month and then still on track for Chicago. My three pelvic stress fractures seem to have healed. One more month. 20 miler this weekend and then let the tapering begin. I’m nowhere near the “runner gal” that you are, but tapering gives me such mixed emotions. Happy, excited, sad, lost etc.
I’m sure you’ll do fabulous this weekend. I distinctly remember reading that post from last year.
Run-on!!
OMG Heidi, I just can’t believe 3 pelvic sfx – you have some fine good things coming your way for having to go through that shit. I’ll be wishing you the best race ever, you deserve it.
It’s amazing how you’re doing a 20 miler already and doing a Half then Full! How long were you out completely? And where are you now compared to before the injury? Hope you don’t mind the inquisition. Must learn about these things because you just never know…
Also shooting for sub 1:33 @ PDR. Good luck and crossing fingers for a cool, wind free morning!
Excellent! Yeah, today reminded me that wind can matter. Been oblivious to it all summer.
Those car inspection thingies you have in the north are BAD! If they did that in AL, no one would even be driving. LOL. I’m so glad you *just* have shin splints. Stuff like that makes me crazy, too. I’m glad the Nick thingie is easier. You are such a strong, tough gal. BTW, I would love to see some pics of your former band. That is too cool!
I’d be getting the locks changed!
Good that the suspected sfx was only a niggly shin. Sfxs are bad news. The “waaaaahhhh” would have woken your upstairs neighbour.
I’m sure you’ll do well in the half (if you haven’t got DOMS from lugging all that Ikea) – your training indicates at least a 92:59. And 15C is a perfect temp for racing!
I’m sure you’ll be fine on Sunday and I think you can definitely do it sub 1:33! Good luck on your 12 today… and btw I love the title for this post, it cracks me up
Good Luck on Sunday!
STEP AWAY FROM THE INTERNET WHEN FEELING PAIN!!!!
I think Loren will be running close to what you’re aiming for so look out for her!
See you Sat!
Good luck this weekend, Flo!!
That is really creepy about the owner just walking in like that. At least now he knows the apartment is occupied! Maybe he will check his records next time. Even if he doesn’t manage the renting, surely he has some record of it! Once a friend of someone in my building had the key but got the apartment number wrong and walked into our apartment in the middle of the night by mistake. We raised hell with the mngt about her key unlocking our door, but nothing was done (we’ve since had the locks changed). It was obvious she meant no harm and was really embarrassed, but for just a moment, I was really terrified–and this was before the attack, so guess how much I would freak out now!
Dog, I’m sure I’ll be seeing Loren’s backside, but it’ll fun to pick her out at the start, hopefully.
Mir, that’s crazy that someone had the same exact key for your apartment as theirs in the same building!
Yeah, I should change my locks but I think there’s always a clause in the lease that the owner always needs access so I’d have to give them a key anyway. Maybe I need to get one of those chains for when I’m here.
Thanks for the good lucks, kids!!
Funny about your upstairs neighbor getting upset because someone could see her walking around nekkid. Reminds me of when I was in a dorm in college. I’m a closet exhibitionist (hmmm, I know that’s really not the appropriate adjective here, but work with me), and I used to change without pulling the drapes – I was on the 3rd floor, BTW. I figured the guys in the dorms across the way wouldn’t mind. One afternoon, though, one of them knocked on the door and let me know that we should pull the drapes. Damn, that was a blow to my self-esteem! Even a (presumably horny) college guy didn’t appreciate me in my naked glory.
Enough about me, though. I’m glad you climbed off the sfx ledge, though I did have to chuckle at the lengths your mental imagery went to – I’m picturing you imagining yourself (more tortured syntax – sorry) all flabbed out in a muumuu, smoking a Camel and hacking up a lung.
Have your revenge on the PDR course this weekend! I can’t wait to hear all about it, and I predict an easy sub-1:33 for you too.
Hey girlie! Can’t believe all that’s happened w/ you this summer. I’ll be in town for PDR (though miles behind you). No seat of shame for you this year! If you have a moment or two to meet up over the weekend let me know – I’d love to catch up!
Totally know where you’re coming from on the imagined sfx thing – been there done that.
^ Interesting confession from Barb
Kat
I was going to say that I am glad you’re okay and it wasn’t anything major (for which I am still happy for you), but Barb got me excited. What hotel you staying at in Boston, Barb? I’ll be sure to get one across the street. ;-)
Zab: Bahahaha! Let’s just say I didn’t learn my lesson in college, either.
Don’t mind at all. I was out for 8 weeks, and eased back into running by doing run/walk intervals. I wasn’t even able to walk a mile during those 8 weeks. Absolutely killed me. Very slowly coming back. I’ve actually tried to focus on changing my form to more of the Chi Running form and it’s made a huge difference. My splits are about a minute quicker that pre-sfx! We’ll see. Keep your fingers crossed for me. My fractures happened the day before my last half that I was supposed to run.
Dammit Flo, I thought you lived on the 2nd floor, I brought my ladder for nothing. Tell your upstairs neighbor I said sorry.
Good luck this weekend. I am passing on the PDR this year, way too crowded and a logistical pain for this running recluse. If I lived as close as you do I wouldn’t give it a second thought. Looking forward to the RR.
Just a sec to say good luck at PDR!!!!!!
Yup. Shin Splints + Internet = SFX.
I think you’re anxious because of last year. You’re gonna kill it this time around. What’s your early pace goal going to be? 7:05 for an even split?
Good luck at PDR! I’ll be a little behind you in Corral 3
Flo — Have a great time at PDR. The “break-in” had to be frustrating. In Houston, apartment complexes are required by ordinance to install deadbolts only accessible from the inside, so that helps a little.
Barb — After reveling in your form, your peeping Tom probably just got an attack of the conscience I’m sure.
LOL! How I love your comments and thank you everyone for the positive wishes for PDR. You can bet you’ll all be with me the entire morning.
Barb, I didn’t know that about you, that’s hilarious.
Progman, sorry you won’t be there. :-( I’ll just have to see you in Philly.
Jim, gonna try to start between 7:00 and 7:05s and then take it from there. (pretending my Garmin will be somewhat accurate).
Good luck Flo! Go get em!!!
Flo, Have a great race woman! I know you will nail that sub-1:33 whether you’re feeling it or not because you’re good like that. Enjoy visiting with dog and Loren.. sounds like a fun weekend. Run Hard! Run Smart! Run Fast! XOXO-Jackie Oh my! on Barb.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!!! Glad to hear that it’s shin splints not a SFX (even though shin splints suck).
Nice race GIM, it just gets better and better. Congrats on the very strong effort.
Aw, thanks Jhowdy, you are quick on the draw!! Was just finishing up my epic tome when you posted this.
And Jackie, BlackBear and Aloha…love you girls!!!!!
