My marathon cycle started this week and I’m absolutely loving having a plan again. Something about scheduling and having a recipe to run with always gets me excited. It was an easy week to start; Wed was a 7-miler w/10x100m strides, Thurs was 9, 4 short recovery miles today and then 12 tomorrow.
Funny how before I got injured and went away I looked at the plan and was all, “4 days a week for the first two weeks? That’s not much running.” Now I’m grateful for the extra days off, they’ll return me to fighting shape in a sensible manner.
On an unrelated note; my posture has always sucked. I’m a constant sloucher from way back so I’ve vowed to work on my core this summer. I’ll be pulling out the Pilates DVD but to supplement it, I just ordered a posture brace called “Shoulders Back” to help train myself into better posture. It was created for equestrians to improve their riding, but it’s for normal people too.
I can’t wait for it to arrive, curious as I am to feel what it’s like to stand correctly for periods of time, not just when I remember for fleeting moments. I’m sure it’ll be annoying, plus it borders on goofy since it’s a vanity item, but if it makes me feel/look better and doesn’t require an injection or incision, what the hell.
The only other thing to report is an outdoor concert we went to the other night: Deathcab For Cutie. One of their songs, I Will Follow You Into The Dark is so beautiful it has made me cry on numerous occasions, and of course, seeing it live left me blubbering all over myself.
Love of mine some day you will die
But I’ll be close behind
I’ll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the No’s on their vacancy signs
If there’s no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I’ll follow you into the dark
That vacancy sign bit gets me every time. Sigh.

I heard a rumor you were doing Philly! Is that what you’re training for???
Hey Kai, I actually wasn’t planning on it, Steamtown is the one I’m signed up for. But if that turns out to be a disaster (marathons are such fickle races) and Philly isn’t full, I’ll go for it.
I did the Philly Half last year and realized I’d be resenting myself if I was running the Full since the Half clogged the streets pretty good.
So I’m more inclined to find smaller marathons. Otoh, I know there are lot of cool people that’ll be running it (you’re thinking about it, right?) so that’s a serious selling point unto itself.
You saw Death Cab for Cutie? You lucky thing! I love that song! And the newer one as well that says, “I will posses your heart.”
I start my marathon plan week after next. I have to say, I’m enjoying the time off, but not feeling right somehow. Been doing some shorter races for fun. I didn’t follow a formal plan last time, so it should be interesting to see how this goes. I’m looking forward to your training write ups! You are going to be awesome at Steamtown, woman!
Don’t forget to let me know when you are coming to MA. My husband of 10,000 years cycles, so he and Nick can ride while we run together!
That’s a great song, too! Gee, Pokey, were you and I separated at birth?
YAY on your plan starting, too and pats on the back for keeping up the racing. I hope to race in the thick of summer once I get acclimated to the weather but I’d be sorely disappointed if I raced now…this miserable heat added to my time off would equal sucky times for sure.
Cool on the biking hubby, too. Maybe you guys need to consider coming out this way, too!
We were at that show too.
When Jason and I were looking for a wedding song, this one came up. Too bad most of their songs (like this one) are about death.
Cool that you were there, too! Yeah, so true about the death theme, not so great for starting a life together.
