I ran tomorrow’s run this afternoon because I’m going to a bicycle race tomorrow.

Looking at my logs, the last time I ran in the afternoon was way back in May, so that made it a novel run right there.  It was incredibly beautiful; the setting sun on the river along with a cool breeze put me at peace with the world.  Of course, being at peace doesn’t preclude my usual cynical pondering of why so many people run in sweatshirts, pants and multi-layers when it’s 59 degrees, meanwhile I’m sweating in my sleeveless tank, but that’s one of the mysteries of life, I guess.

Anyway, it was truly a special run, I felt strong and lithe, going 5 miles @ 8:49 avg.  I can’t believe how good I feel less than 7 days from the marathon so I’m doing that 10K on Nov. 2nd for sure.  Going to post a question to the Training forum, see if it’s worth it to stick a tempo or interval session in before the race or not push anything.  I’m sure that just because I feel recovered doesn’t mean I am and they say speed sessions don’t “show” until 10 days after, so we’ll see what the general consensus is.

But now it’s time to shower and then pig out with Nick on Indian food, my fave.  Life doesn’t get any better than this.

  • I would say dont push anything, but im a wimp. I guess you have to figure out how you feel, marathon recovery wise. I had 2 weeks between my marathon and 10K, other then one real hard hill run it was all easy runs in between. Just saying it worked for me. In long run, (pun intended) better off making sure your recovered from marathon. I say to error on side of caution right now, but if you think your good to go and it makes you happy go run your tempo run or intervals. I would say do which ever you feel is easier to recover from if you decide to. Does sound too close for the speed work to be effective. This are just my unexpert opinion.

I’m with Bruce. I injured myself by running 10 miles on the Saturday following my marathon, so be careful. The race itself was a quite a speed session, training-wise. I think you’ll be surprised how fast you are in that 10K.

  • Flo:

Thanks guys, I’ll be careful. Haven’t gone longer than 5 and will probably stick with Pfitz as far as run length next week, which hits 7 tops. I’m curious to see what replies I get, though. Will keep you posted.

  • doggie poo:

wow, I’ve barely run my recover runs under 10 minute pace!

  • Jim E:

I imagine the Marathon Maniacs know a thing or two about this recovery stuff. Any MM’s out there?

  • Heidi B.:

Sounds like a feeling of almost complete euphoria while on your run today. Love those days when you are so at peace and you think life simply can’t get any better. Honestly, I think only a runner can identify with that awesome feeling. Sounds like you are being cautious on the recovery runs. It’s hard to stick to such low mileage but so worth it. Glad your run “rawked” today!

  • Flo:

Jim, I don’t think this is a pertinent Marathon Maniac question. It’s about short racing after a marathon and they’re into doing lots of consecutive long races, so speed isn’t on the radar that much. I wouldn’t ask an ultra runner this question either.

So far on the thread, one “go ahead with the speedwork”, one “be cautious” and one “do strides the week of the race”.

  • Jim E:

Good point. I guess the MM’s don’t do much speed during a marathon season. I’m a big fan of strides. They remind your legs about fast turnover without introducing much stress. Kinda fun to do, too (compared to, say, mile intervals – ugh!)

  • Flo:

Me too, I love doing strides and mile intervals are evil incarnate. Pfitz had strides that week anyway, so maybe I’ll be a good girl and just do that. Something about races, they always freak me out and I always want to eek out anything I can preceding them. Maybe that’s my message to do more races so they’re not such a heart-flutterer.

What’s your next race? Anything coming up soon?

  • Jim E:

Oh, nothing much, unless you count the CIM marathon on Dec 7. A nice little jog with a bit of downhill. So relaxing.

  • Flo:

Sounds like a fun little jaunt in the park Dec 7. Lol, I thought maybe a tune-up race might be on the calendar. :D

  • Jim E:

The San Jose Half was the tuneup race. I learned two things:
I should recalibrate my training to VDOT 44 (Daniels) and plan seriously for that BQ.
I should NOT wear lightweight shoes for long races. ;) I was probably lucky to get away with soft tissue damage, which is healing nicely. It’s back to the old reliables for the time being (New Balance 882)

  • Jim E:

Apropos of nothing, here’s a story from my morning paper – front page, no less. A “pretty good runner” beat the elites in the Nike Womens Marathon, but, sorry, no prize for you:
