Nick and I have been talking about breaking up for a while, lately very seriously and have finally come to the achingly sad conclusion that it’s time.

The worst part is that we’re not mad at one another so there’s no rancor, no mean words to help end this thing with finality, just the mutual understanding that the end of an era has come. Five years together, living together for over three.

So yesterday I looked at an apartment. Nick came with me. It was a shithole. I got home and burst into tears. Everything is just so fucking sad right now.

The funny thing is I may end up living downstairs for awhile in a newly vacant apartment (from when Nick’s son moved out). We’re talking about it, it has a lot of positive points to it, so we’ll see. Meanwhile, I’m going to look at another shithole today (I know it will be for what I can afford).

And that’s the dealio.

  • That’s rough, Flo. it’s good that you’re still on good terms. Being neighbors might be awkward, but if it means a better apartment, well…

Cathi was reading some of our exchanges a while ago and asked “Flo has a boyfriend, right?”. Why yes, he’s mentioned here, and here…
So please get a new BF soon!

I wish I had something I could say to make the situation more bearable. Sometimes it is easier if there is cussing and broken furniture. The strength you display in your running will get you thru this I believe.

  • Barb:

Oh, Flo. I’m sorry. Even if this is the right thing, that doesn’t mean it’s an easy thing. I agree that your runs will help you through this. And you will get through it. I’ll be thinking about you. Run strong.

  • I’m sorry. At least you’re both self-aware and mature enough to be able to manage this without the usual crockery throwing.

Never mind. There is no bright side.

  • sllygrl:

Ugh – I thought I was going to read how you missed a mile by ten seconds or something. I have no words of wisdom, which is truly never surprising – remain fearless, run strong, everything in time…

  • Ela:

Sucks. You know you are my idol, so run strong … we miss you on MRT.

  • No words, just ((((((HUGS)))))).

  • sara:

very sorry to read about this, Flo :( even with such a civil end to a relationship there is still pain and my heart goes out to you. i hope your running can serve as a means of comfort during this transition period.

  • black bear:

Flo, That stinks, but I know your new beginning is going to be right around the corner from the shithole. ((()))) Mary

  • Sorry to hear that Flo. But maybe its just a new begining.

  • CJ:

Just wanted to say sorry and that really sucks, even if it’s on agreeable terms. You are an amazing person and I wish you exciting new adventures.

    CJ

  • Ewen:

    Sorry.

Can you look at sharing with a girlfriend for a while? Better than being by yourself in a shithole apartment.

That’s a bit lame, but all I could think of. Run strong.

  • Stevi:

I just wanted to say I’m really sorry times right now suck. I hope everything comes to a peaceful conclusion for you. Good luck!

  • I am so sorry Flo! Have a hug on me!

  • Flo:

You guys and gals are always such amazing support. I’m blessed to have you all sending me such well wishes. Thank you x 1,000,000,000. Feeling better already, saw a not-gross apartment yesterday in my price-range and looking at another in an hour. That, and Nick and I are in a really good place; much hugging, sweetness and support for each other. It’s going to be ok.

  • Sorry to hear the news, Flo. Good luck with the apartment shopping. You are amazing and strong. (((hugs)))

  • I hope today’s non-shithole was even better than yesterdays! Go get ‘em Flo!

  • Oh bummer :( But glad to hear there are a few non shitholes for you to consider. Sending hugs from Seattle!

  • Sorry to hear the news. But, also, admire your courage to start a new life when realizing this isn’t what you want any longer. I am sure a bright new beginning is just around the corner …

  • Sorry to hear Flo! I don’t know if seeing your ex everyday in the same building would be a good thing. I hope you are able to find a nonshithole, but it seems with rentals no matter the city, they all have holes.

    Keep running strong!!!!!

  • Dee:

I’m a complete stranger to you, but I do follow your blog regularly, and I just wanted to wish you the very best in this ending and new beginning of the next stage of your life. I hope your running is able to pull you out of the sad moments you’ll experience throughout this time. Good luck to you in running, love and life!

  • I am really sorry, Flo.

  • Heidi B.:

You are VERY strong and only you know what’s best for you and Nick. Hang in there and follow your heart!! ;-)

  • Wow – everytime I come here to catch up with what you’re doing it seems there is a bombshell announcement. Sorry to hear about this, but I have no doubt you will come through with the same grace and strength that you show in your running. Looking forward to seeing you and your gel flasks (still use those putrid things?) in Philly Flo.

  • I’m a little behind in my blog reading and just saw this… Sorry to hear that. Hope all works out well for you.

  • Tobey:

    Flo,
Sorry to hear the news :(
